George Allen Burlingham (1868-1948)
George Allen Burlingham was born on 26 October 1868 (his cemetery marker has the year as 1869) in Pine Creek, Allegan Co., Michigan.1,2,4 He was the son of Philip Burlingham and Charity Mandana Phelps.3,2 He was married first, by S. D. McKee, to Bessie Flynn on 3 July 1894 in Allegan, Allegan Co., Michigan.5 He was married second, by J. R. Niergarth, to Francis Josephine Goshorn, daughter of James Goshorn and Margaret Barrager, on 14 November 1898 in St. Joseph, Berrien Co., Michigan.6,7,8 He died on 31 May 1948 at age 79, at a roadside park in Comstock Twp., Kalamazoo Co., Michigan, where he was enjoying a Memorial Day outing with his son and family. (The Burlingham family genealogy lists his death date as 30 May 1947, but this is apparently wrong. His cemetery marker has the year as 1948. In addition, his obituary (which we only have as a photocopy, without a date or newspaper name) refers to his wife's death "last December 9," and from his wife Josephine's obituary, we know that she died 10 December 1947. Therefore, George's death must have been in 1948, not 1947.)3,1,9,4,7 He was buried on 4 June 1948 at Mountain Home Cemetery in Allegan Co., Michigan.3,1,4,2

Ann Sherwood was born on 22 February 1807 in Richfield, Otsego Co., New York, (or possibly in Wilton, Fairfield Co., Connecticut).2,4 She was the daughter of Hull Sherwood and Ann Eaton.3 She was married first, by Col. Isaac Barnes, to Erastus A. Jackson on 5 February 1832 (the History of Allegan and Barry Counties, Michigan, says December 1832) in Allegan Co., Michigan. This was a double wedding, with the bride's sister Mary and A. L. Cotton, and was the first wedding in Allegan County. (The transcribed online marriage record says the marriage was in Kalamazoo County. Allegan County was created on 2 March 1831, but a government was not formally organized until 1 September 1835. Until that time the area remained attached to Kalamazoo County for legal purposes.)5,6,2 She married second Philip Burlingham, son of Philip Burlingham and Polly Babcock, on 27 April 1836 in Otsego Twp., Allegan Co., Michigan. They were married by Oka Town, husband of the bride's sister Martha Sherwood. The witnesses were (--?--) Thomas and Martha Town (probably the bride's sister).1 She died at age 40, probably in childbirth, on 3 July 1847.2
