This family story with James Davis and his wife Mary Sabey. James was born in 1800 at Colmorth, Bedfordshire, England. He parents were Samuel Davis and Ann Gales. James married Mary Sabey on the 26 November 1821 at Little Stukeley, Huntingdonshire, England.

The Davis family left England for Australia in 1848 aboard the ship "Emperor". They arrived in Sydney just before James and Mary's 27 wedding anniversary and the birth of their first grandchild that survived.

James and Mary had eleven children. All were born at Little Stukeley, Huntingdonshire, England.

  1. John, born 22 September 1822. He died young.
  2. Samuel, born 26 August 1824.
  3. Peter, born 3 October 1826. Peter married Mary Cox on the 31 January 1849. He died on the 19 January 1911 at Maclean, New South Wales.
  4. James, born 14 February 1830. He died on the 4 July 1830. At Little Stukeley, Huntingdonshire, England.
  5. Mary Ann was born on the 10 July 1831 and died young.
  6. Mary Ann was born on the 10 May 1832 and died young.
  7. James was born on teh 20 September 1833. On the 5 November 1855 he married Rachel Shannon. James died on the 19 April 1890 at Maclean, New South Wales.
  8. Charles was born on the 3 July 1836. he married Emily Blanchford Gale on the 23 December 1869. Charles died on the 23 January 1905 at Maclean, New South Wales.
  9. John, born 26 August 1938. On the 9 July 1860 he marries Johanna Shannock. John died on the 30 October 1926 at Maclean, New South Wales.
  10. Lavender born on the 21 June 1840. He married Mary Hannah Childs on the 12 July 1871. Lavender died on the 4 March 1920 at Grafton, New South Wales.
  11. George, born on the 7 May 1842. He married Eilen Power on the 29 Setpember 1868. George died on the 13 January 1897 at Maclean, New South Wales.
Mary died on the 22 April 1878 at Cowper, New South Wales. James died on the 25 July 1879 at Palmers Creek New South Wales.

Samuel married Martha Clark on the 12 November 1844 at Little Stukeley, Huntingdonshire, England. Martha's parents were Thomas and Susan Clark.

Samuel and Martha had seventeen children. The first three dying either in England or on the ship over.

  1. William was born on the 9 April 1846 and died on the 5 November 1846 at Little Stukeley, Huntingdonshire, England.
  2. Maryann was born on the 29 April 1847 at Little Stukeley, Huntingdonshire, England. She died in August 1848 on board the ship "Emperor"
  3. Clark Thomas born October 1848 and died October 1848 on board the ship "Emperor.
  4. Thomas Charles was born on the 17 September 1849 at Mudgee, New South Wales. Thomas married Lettice Eliza Wallwork on the 9 November 1871. He died on the 30 September 1930 at Burwood, New Soutn Wales.
  5. Mary Ann was born on the 17 April 1851 at Hinton, New South Wales. She married John Joseph Nipperess.
  6. Eliza was born on the 3 May 1853 at Turin River, New South Wales. She died in March 1854 at Williams River, New South Wales.
  7. Elizabeth was born on the 25 December 1854, Williams River, New South Wales. She married John Louis Bayldon in 1874.
  8. Susan was born on the 26 June 1856, Williams River, New South Wales. She married Joseph George Groves in 1874.
  9. Samuel, born on the 12 December 1857 at Taree, New South Wales. He died in March 1859. Manning River, New South Wales.
  10. John, born on the 26 October 1859 at Taree, New South Wales. He married twice. First to Annie Jane Wiggins in 1882 and second to Elizabeth Bowling in 1904.
  11. George was born on the 6 September 1861, Manning River, New South Wales. On the 6 September 1882 he married Emma Rippon.
  12. William Henry was born on the 31 August 1863, Swan Creek, New South Wales. He married Ellen gray in 1888.
  13. Samuel was born on the 27 May 1865 Woodford Island, New South Wales. On the 27 August 1888, he married Edith May Lambourne.
  14. Lavender was born on the 25 August 1867 Clarence River, New South Wales. He died on the 5 December 1876.
  15. Alfred was born on the 27 April 1869 Clarence River, New South Wales. He died on the 29 July 1890.
  16. Clark Richard, born on the 11 April 1871, Clarence River, New South Wales.
  17. Arthur 22 October 1874 Clarence River, New South Wales. He married Florence Matilda Law in 1903.

After they arrived in Australia, they headed for Mudgee over the Blue Mountains. By April 1851 they had arrived at Hinton, New South Wales. By December 1857 they had made their way to the Manning River. By August 1863 they were in the Clarence area.

Post Office records show that they lived near Ulmarrra by 1881. James spent about ten years on the Richmond. He was popular with all and was a prominent worker in the Methodist Church.

Martha died on the 18 January 1899 and Samuel on the 8 July 1907. They are both buried in the Grafton Cemetery, New South Wales.

When Samuel died there were ten living out of the seventeen children.
