Shortly after Martin settled down in Pilot Knob, Missouri, the Civil War began and he was a private in the 5th Missouri Volunteer Infantry having enlisted on October 22, 1861 until November 22, 1862 when he was discharged. According to the Centennial, put out in 1957 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Iron County, Martin Wolff participated in the Battle of Pilot Knob.
Here is another interesting tidbit....
The Confederates, led by General Sterling Price, engaged in the Battle of Pilot Knob on September 27, 1864 at Fort Davidson. I ran across some information on this battle while reading a biography of someone else. This book offered many letters and interviews with friends and relatives regarding this famous person when I came across the statement below:
". . . the bullets followed thick and fast . . . as the survivor drew near, Will shouted: "it's Wild Bill the Union Scout" a cheer greeted the intrepid Colonel Hickok, and he rode into camp surrounded by a party of admirers. The information he brought proved of great value in the Battle of Pilot Knob . . . which almost immediately followed."
I was reading, They Called him Wild Bill, The Life and Adventures of James Butler Hickok. The quote above was one they took from a book by Helen Cody Wetmore regarding the life story of Col. William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) and a conversation he had with James Butler Hickok. It seems that there were several versions of his daring escapade, but without question, "Wild Bill" Hickok was a Union spy and scout during the Civil War mostly in southwest Missouri. When Price's army was near the Arkansas River in early September of 1864, Wild Bill joined as a new recruit near Dardanelle under an assumed name. After he gathered information on every regiment and its strength, how much cavalry there was, and how many guns the artillery had, he then had to escape to the Union side. This escape was naturally considered one of his great adventurous feats and listed in his biography.

Mrs. Mary Wolff was born the 25th of March 1829, and passed away the 26th of June, 1916, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Hopke, with whom she had made her home for the past eight years. Her former home was in St. Louis. At the time of her death she was aged 87 years, 3 months and one day. Her husband preceded her in death some years ago. She leaves to mourn her death, four children, twenty grand children, fifteen great-grand children and one great-great grandchild. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Fred Hopke, and at 2 o'Clock at the German Lutheran church of which she was a lifelong and faithful member. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. A.C. Mennjcke and the remains were laid to rest in the church cemetery.
Mary's nephew and niece both married into the Firch family. The Firch family came from Kreisschwetz, West Prussia, Germany which is very close in spelling to the Schwetz, Prussia spelling where Maria and Martin Wolff married. I am now curious if this could be the same town.
SCHWETZ, a town of Germany, in the Prussian province of West Prussia, on the left bank of the Vistula, 29 m. by rail N.E. of Bromberg. Pop. (1905) 7747. It has an Evangelical church, two Roman Catholic churches, a synagogue and an old convent, now used as a lunatic asylum, and also the remains of a castle built in the 14th century by the Teutonic Order. The chief industries are the making of sugar and shoes, and there are also electrical works and saw-mills.
