I have therefore removed the clickable links for the e-mail addresses to keep these addresses from being harvested for junk mail. You will still see the person's e-mail listed below the entries, however, you will have to copy and paste the address into your mail program in order to contact the person. I am looking for information on John Levi THORNTON, b. 1780 in NC, d. 1840's in Chickasaw
Co., Mississippi. He moved from NC to TN, as he married Catherine KIRK (d. of John
KIRK, b. 1790 in GA) in Williamson Co., TN 6 Oct 1808. There are three known sons:
James David (b. 1807), George W. (b. 1812), and S.J. (b. 1832). There were
four other children, but their names are not yet known. James David THORNTON was
born about 1807 in possibly South Carolina. (His place and year of birth are from
the census, and something must be in error.) His family moved to Mississippi, where
about 1830 he married Clarkie TULLOS, daughter of Willoughby TULLOS and Anna MILLS (of
Duplin Co., NC). The family lived in Smith County, MS, where thirteen children were
born to them. About 1858 the family moved to Trinity County, Texas. The oldest
son Ransom was a Methodist preacher and my fourth great grandfather. Would love to

I am researching the THORNTONs of Union Point, Georgia. I am a direct descendent of
Vincent Redman THORNTON who was a Baptist Minister. My Great-Grandfather was Charles
Jenkins THORNTON who was one of the last Thorntons to own the Thornton House that now
resides in the Plantation Village at Stone Mountain Park. He was the last male Thornton on
that side of the family. He had 8 children that lived, but none of the boys had children
to carry the Thornton name. In the book "A History of Greene County, Georgia"
and a paper written by "Papa", it states that this line of Thorntons are related
to Matthew Redman THORNTON who signed the Declaration of Independence. I cannot find proof
of this. If you have or need any information on this side of the family, please feel free
to contact me.

William Thornton, please email me. I am interested in William "the

his passage by serving on the ship "Honour" about 1641/2 and that he did future
trading as well, from other ships (such as the "Mary Jane"). Would love to

He brought with him, brothers William and Anthony, and young son Thomas. Young Thomas
married Lucinda WATERS. To this marriage was born a son Thomas. So we have Thomas I,
Thomas II, and Thomas III. Thomas II and Thomas III were in the central part of Ky.
(Washington County) by 1806. Thomas II had married (2nd marriage) Elizabeth KITCHEN
and had 2 children born in Va., Harrison Payton and Maria. Thomas III had married
Nancy KITCHEN (Elizabeth's sister) and had 2 children born in Va., Margaret and
Mary. The Kitchen girls mother was Nancy HARRISON. The family from 1806 down I
have. What I need is the family in the time period 1750-1806 in Va. to be proven,

My GG Grandmother was Eugenia Octave THORNTON, 1852-1932, who married Isaac Archie
JACKSON. Her death certificate says her father was "G. Thornton" -- no
proof, but I know she had a younger brother Alonzo (or Alonza) and sister Malissa with
whom she resided in the 1880 census in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, before she married in
December of that year. I'm seeking to learn my Thornton roots and would appreciate
hearing from anyone with insights -- and I'm happy to share what I have or what I may
discover.

I am searching for my great-grandfather, Josiah Westmoreland THORNTON. He was born, either in Lauderdale County, Alabama or Wayne County, Tennessee, in 1832. He married Elzura Jane CYPERT, and they had quite a few children, including my grandfather, Zachary Newton THORNTON.
My problem is, my mother, ZNT's daughter, is now 94 and I am preparing the documentation for her application to the DAR, and I can't find where Josiah W. died.
Most people insist that he died in Wayne County, Tennessee, but offer no proof. I find a J. W. Thornton on an 1891 tax list, but that's the last I have on him. By 1900, all his children had left home, and there was no one remaining in Wayne County to care for him in his old age. At some point in time, he went to live with his daughter, Emmarintha Ann Thornton GREESON near Newalla, Potawattomie, Oklahoma, according to my mother and my one remaining uncle. They both agree that he lived with Aunt Emma.
I do not know if he died in Oklahoma. It would seem logical that he did, if he was living there. If he had died in Wayne County, Tennessee, I can't see for the life of me why he wouldn't have been buried in the same cemetery as his wife and his son, Miles Perry. He's not there.
Have you any information that might get me closer to a place and date of death for him?
Thank you, Anita

On behalf of myself and other researchers of this THORNTON family line, I am seeking to find more information of one Thomas L. Thornton living in Montgomery Co., VA in 1810 (later part of Pulaski Co., VA) who was married to a Susan (Elizabeth) MEREDITH. His decendants are well documented but none of the researchers I've come into contact with so far have been able to determine his parents or those of his wife. Indeed, it is not verifiable that his wife's surname was MEREDITH. This is only a supposition based on the name of one of their sons being Meredith (my 3rd-gr-gf). Their sons were named Thomas, John, Peter, Robert, and Meredith and I believe they are listed in cronological order. John and Meredith both named their first born sons James A. Thornton and this could indicate that they were nephews of Thomas and not his childred as it was traditional then to name the first son after ones father. There is a huge mystery as to how this Thomas L. Thornton arrived in Montgomery Co., VA when all the others of that family name were further north in Virginia. A distant rumour has his line coming out of Scotland with a Peter Thornton. Hoping someone out there has an answer or clue.

I am married to Nancy THORNTON who is supposedly descended from William THORNTON "the Immigrant" (1627 - c.1708), through his son William, then his son Francis, then William, then James (1743 - 1814). There are problems with this genealogy, since James' wife is listed as Jannett MONTGOMERY, who is supposedly a cousin of Gen. MONTGOMERY. I cannot find references to her elsewhere, certainly not in relation to James THORNTON. This genealogy is supposedly traced through a series of old family Bibles (4 different generations), although I have not seen those Bibles at this time.

I suppose that DNA is the only way to go since Yorktown records are gone.

Rebecca (Reubah) D. THORNTON, b. 9 Dec 1837 in AL. I believe she is the daughter of Jeremiah H. THORNTON b. 1811 and died 6 Nov 1886. He was probably b. in GA or AL. Jeremiah came to Texas around 1850-60 and I believe he died in either Nacogdoches Co., TX or Angelina Co., TX. Rebecca married John CAUTHRON and lived in Van Zandt Co., TX. Rebecca has a sister, Amanda and a brother John. Any Texas connections out there?

I am researching the family of Rial Benjamin THORNTON from Indiana. I can't find anything except his marriage and two census records. So I am looking everywhere. They seem to be all connected in one way or another so I am looking for anything helpful. Been researching this surname for three years and have discovered some secrets but can't go back any further until I find his parents.

I am searching (and searching!) for the parents of two of my female ancestors. The first is Elizabeth E. THORNTON b. 1825 in VA and m. Isaac SHANK in 1844 in Mason County, WV. The second woman is Martha L. THORNTON b. 1832 in eastern VA and m. John Howell SHANK in 1851 in Buffalo County, WV. John is actually Isaac's brother and the 1850 census finds Martha living with Isaac and Elizabeth, leading me to believe the two women to be sisters or cousins. I can't seem to break the deadlock on finding the parents of these women. Please let me know if you have this information.

James Arvin THORNTON of Surry Co., NC born 1779 went to Strawberry Plains, Jefferson Co., TN and was married to (1.) Jemimah SEAT (2.) Mary (Polly) FULCHER (3.) Elizabeth McMILLAN.
He later moved to Knox County, Tennessee. He died in 1860. He was the son of William THORNTON of Westmoreland Co., and Lunenburg Co., VA. His mother was Sarah ARVINE/ARVIN of Lunenburg Co., VA. Two of his sisters was Nancy THORNTON of Surry Co., NC who married Jamison Wade THORNTON and Sarah THORNTON of Surry Co., NC who married Joseph MORELAND, my 3rd great grandfather. Have been searching for James' father, William Thornton's parents for over 30 years.. Do not know what THORNTON family this William was from in early 1700's of Lunenburg Co., VA as there were other THORNTON families living there at the time he and Sarah were married.

Wayne is the first of his THORNTON's to be born in Texas. His father, Levis M. was brought to Wharton cty, TX by his grandfather, James Thomas Thornton and his grandmother from Tallapoosa Cty, AL in 1909 to Pledger, Wharton Cty, TX. The grgrandfather, Willis Russell Thornton, and his brothers and sisters were brought to Coosa Cty, AL by their mother from Chambers Cty, AL. Mary Mitchell Thornton and the younger children are found in the Coosa Cty. AL 1850 census. We happened upon a book about Chambers Cty, AL by Bobby Lindsey, "The Reason for the Tears" listing Willis and his sister Caroline as students in private school in Chambers Cty and their patron was Thomas A. Thornton, 1841-1843. The kids are listed as orphans in 1844, so we presume Thomas A. Thornton died (wish I knew the cause).

Desperatly looking for Alfred H. THORNTON, I, II, Jr. or Senior. Supposedly, from the NJ area (more specifically, North Arlington, Kearny area). Time is pretty recent - 1900's to today. Samuel Edgar Thornton was married to Arloa Marie WYATT of Sedan, Kansas. I have very little information beyond that. I have just recently found a bunch of info on Arloa Wyatt, but need to verify it before I post it. I have a couple links to alot of Thorntons listed in 1830, and 1840 census.. mostly northeast USA.

I've got Lawrence TALIAFERRO, b. 1684, Essex, VA; d. 27 June 1726 in Essex, md. to Sarah THORNTON, b. 17 Dec. 1680 in Petsworth Par., Gloucester, VA. I don't have the parents of Sarah.
Also, I'm connected collaterally to the KILLEBREWs thru the marriage of E.A. (Eli ASBERRY - according to the Killebrew List) and Katherine (Katie D.) Johnston/son, d/o Charles Henry JOHNSON (sic) & Maria C. (per Cumberland Presby. (Zion) Cem., Yazoo, MS.) Katie is the niece of my 2nd gr grandfather, George Washington JOHNSTON, Sr. & Sarah/Sally G. POPE.
Would love to hear from anyone with any of these connections, whether direct or collaterally, as we're all kin. I'm finding that out more every day. It's become so totally mind-boggling, to the point that I'm having to get friends with no connection & more objectivity to help sort it all out. Warmest Regards,

I've become interested in the THORNTON lineage quite recently. While visiting my grandmother's and grandfather's graves (Gordon THORNTON), in Schenectady, NY, I noticed a "Sons of Liberty" crest on his stone. We have a THORNTON plot of 13. Among the names were Anthony Reed THORNTON, Dorcas Reed THORNTON, and Edward Everett THORNTON (Edward was my Great Grandfather). After talking to the groundskeeper, he said there was another THORNTON plot. The dates of the deceased there are between the mid 1800s and early 1900s. I will be going there to look up the names soon.

Researching: Thornton, Cornwell
Seeking the ancestry of Elizabeth THORNTON bc 1776 - married circa 1797 Charles CORNWELL in Virginia, likely Prince William County. Charles Cornwell and Elizabeth Thornton moved to Jefferson County, Kentucky sometime after 1802. Some researchers believe that she moved back to Virginia after the death of her husband and died there in 1825. I believe that Elizabeth Thornton's full name may have been Martha Elizabeth Thornton because three of her sons named daughters Martha Elizabeth.
I have very few clues as to the identity of Elizabeth Thornton's parents, however, the first son of her son Harrison Cornwell was named Charles Thruston Cornwell. This would seem to connect Elizabeth Thornton to the THRUSTON family who intermarried with the Thorntons in Virginia, some of whom moved to Jefferson County, Kentucky, notably Charles Mynn Thruston 1738-1812 who had a daughter, Sarah Thruston who married Col. John Thornton of Hanover County, Virginia. The name Thruston was passed down in the Cornwell/Thornton family so it was undoubtedly a name of some importance, although I have been unable to substantiate this link.
Other possible parents for Elizabeth Thornton may be Charles THORNTON and Mary Ann GALLAHUE of Prince William County, VA. (After the death of Charles Thornton, Mary Ann Gallahue married Alexander KEITH.) Other possible parents are William THORNTON and Martha STUART. These are the most promising leads, determined by association among families.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Researching: THORNTON - WHITLEY
Researching father's mother's side. Sadie Mae WHITLEY, daughter of Rachel THORNTON born 1901-d. 1981 (was my great grandma). She was married to an Oscar A. Whitley, sons and daughters: Sadie Mae m. Wallace Franks, Ruby, Needham, and Willard Oscar. From Johnston, North Carolina. Rachel is Cherokee Indian, would like to trace back this side of the family. Rachel's brothers and sisters that I heard of: Leamon, Mamie, Claire, and Lucille. Not sure who Rachel's mom and dad were, don't know if both were Cherokee, or just one side was. Know that a male on this family side who was Cherokee was a horse doctor, and treated horses "the Indian way". Almost positive most of the Cherokees on this side did not go on the Trial of Tears and intermarried with whites or tried to pass as whites. I have photos of Rachel, and she did not look all white, did have Indian features, but from the couple on records that I found, she somehow passed as white, and wrote white down, so can't always rely on records... Any info will be looked into.
