Andrew and Conradina (Amelunke) Suedekum

1. Andreas (Andrew)2 SUEDEKUM was born October 27, 1821 in the area around the Harz Mountains, Braunschweig, Germany1,2,3, and died February 26, 1885 in Gordonville, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri4,5,6,7. He married Johanne Sophie "Conradine" Albertine AMELUNKE March 02, 1848 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri8, daughter of Heinrich "Christian" AMELUNKE and Johanne KLUSMANN. She was born February 27, 1827 in Klein Rhüden (now Seesen-Rhüden), Braunschweig, Germany9,10,11,12,13, and died September 04, 1883 in Gordonville, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri14,15.

Notes for Andreas (Andrew) Suedekum:
History of Southeast Missouri, By Robert Sidney Douglass, A.B., LL. B., Professor of History, State Normal School, Cape Girardeau, Mo., Originally published in 1912 by Lewis Publishing Company, New York and Chicago lists Andrew Südecum as one of the original founders of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dutchtown, also known as the Swampgemeinde congregation. He is listed as a baptism sponsor for two children there: Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Andreas Robert Trauernicht, Baptized on January 1, 1852 and Johann Friedrich Schwab, baptized on July 11, 1852. Both baptisms took place at the Swampgemeinde congregation which is now Dutchtown, Missouri. Pastor Friedrich Wilhelm Umbeck performed both services. During the winter when the leaves have fallen off the trees, you can see the Dutchtown church from the Suedekum farm.

To reach the cemetery, take Dutchtown exit (Hwy. 74) to Road 214 (North), then 213 North, the cemetery is about 1 1/2 miles from Hwy. 74 on left side of road (1 city block from road) in a cow field, where road intersects (a "T" intersection). It is located in among a bunch of cedar trees and has a small fence enclosing the cemetery. Lots of brush and growth.

Andrew Sidicum is listed in the Sale of Property for Christian Abelunke who was deceased, to receive a debt due from the estate and is listed on several mortgages made by Henry Amelunke. Mortgages, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri: Maria Amelunke and Hy. Amelunke to Andrew Sidekum - Mortgage on Personal Property. Recorded 16 May 1857. Hy. Amelung & wife to Andrew Sidekum - Mortgage on land in T 30 R 12 East. Recorded 13 November 1858. Amelunke & wife to Andrew Sudecum - Mortgage. Recorded 5 June 1860.

"Suedekum" is the german translation of "circumspicete", a word out of the old Latin language, spoken in the Roman Empire and in the Middle Ages in Europe. It means in German: "Sieh dich um", in English: "Look out for".

The name is first mentioned in a document in 1228 by duke Barnim I. of Pommerania (in the northern of Germany, near the Baltic sea). Barnim gave land to a man as a reward for true service. He lead him onto a hill, saying to him: "Look out for, that is Your land".

In the Thirty Years´ War (1618-1648) the Suedekum family had to go with the Swedish troops north to the Harz mountains (Lower Saxony) where the most of them live today. Two of the Suedekums emigrated from Germany to America in the nineteenth century. I think Suedekum in Switzerland are unknown. Although Andrew Suedekum listed that he was born in Switzerland on the census records, he most likely was born near the Harz mountains in the same area that the Bodenstein, Amelunke, and Actherman's were born.

Obituary received from Dorothy Rowley.

KILLED BY LIGHTNING IN FIELD SATURDAY

Arthur Suedekum stricken by bolt while harrowing in field. His life snuffed out in the twinkling of an eye by a bolt of lightning as he was standing on a harrow in a field on his farm three or four miles southeast of Gordonville last Saturday.

Mr. Suedekum was engaged in harrowing down corn stalks, having four animals hitched to the harrow, while Walter Gerecke, his hired man, was plowing in the same field. A thunder shower had formed, moving eastward and suddenly there was a deafening crash and then Gerecke saw his employer lying on the ground with the team running away. He ran there and seeing that Suedekum was apparently lifeless, he ran to the house to notify the family and taking a car and accompanied by the father, W. M. Suedekum, brought the body to the house. The body was badly burned and scorched, and the clothing torn in shreds, one shoe being torn off and the other ripped, but it is reported that a watch on his body was still running.

The unfortunate man was the eldest son of W. M. Suedekum, a well known farmer, and was almost 32 years old. In 1930 he was married to Mrs. Eda Holloway, and they had one daughter. Besides his wife, child and a stepdaughter he leaves his father; one brother, Theodore; and two sisters, Miss. Matilda Suedekum and Mrs. Henry Keller.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the Zion Lutheran church south of Gordonville, of which he had been a member.
