Children
of George Forbes Oliver & Frances M. Watson-Oliver
Dorothy, born 1925 (prior marriage), married Lloyd Balcome,
Rochester, MN
Gloria Mae , born 1927, married George William Bryan, Mpls
MerryAnne, born 1929, married Hegbert Olson, Mpls
George Oliver, Jr. ("Buddy"), twin of MerryAnne, born
1929, married several times.
George Forbes Oliver was born in 1897
to George Loyal Oliver and Emma Dickmann. He was raised in Zumbro
Falls, Wabasha County and farmed there until 1936, when he moved
to Mpls. George & Frances met at a barn dance near Lake City,
MN. and were married in 1926. In Mpls, George was in the
landscaping business and Frances worked at Shriner's Childrens
Hospital as a nursing assistant. Gloria, MerryAnne & Buddy
were born in Zumbro Falls, MN, near the old homestead. In the
1940's they purchased a farm and the Soo Hotel in Moose Lake, MN
and spent many week-ends there, until they were able to retire
and move there permanently. My cousins and I spent entire summers
with them on the farm, where my grandpa boarded many horses.
There was no better cook in the whole world like Grandma and most
of the time, she cooked from sun-up until sun down (I've included
one of here recipes and hope you will try it. I know you'll love
it!). In their later years, they were lonesome for family --
Moose Lake had grown and they no longer knew as many people as
they once did. So, in 1972 they moved to Nisswa, MN to be near
Gloria & George. In the last year of her life, they went back
to Moose Lake. They found a cute little log house that one of
their grandsons now owns. Frances died on Memorial Day Weekend,
1979 and George died in 1982. They are both buried in Moose Lake,
MN. Grandpa & I made several trips to Guilford Township,
Wabasa County before he died and even at 85 he remembered all the
old country roads and led us directly to the Orris Oliver
homestead and the Lincoln Cemetery, where Orris & family are
buried. He was so proud of his heritage and supplied many, many
stories about the Olivers during the late 1800's - early 1900's.
The parents of Frances M. Watson were Kathyn Denzer and James
Watson, who were married in Granby, Missouri in 1908. Kathryn
Denzer's parents, Stephen Denzer and Hannah O'Connor left Lake
Preston, South Dakota and traveled to Missouri, seeking work in
the zinc fields. Six children went with them, 2 boys and 4
daughters, Kathryn one of them. The marriage between James Watson
and Kathryn Denzer was short-lived, as James Watson had long-established
himself in Missouri and Kathryn wished to return with her family
to Minnesota, when her two brothers became critically ill from TB.
Kathryn returned and settled in Pierce County, WI and met William
Peterson and together they raised Frances. Kathryn died in 1941
from a ruptured appendix and is buried in the Trenton Cemetery,
Pierce County. She had no further children.
