The surname Mugford appears to have originated mainly in Devon, England, but is also found in Cornwall (LDS IGI). Apparently, there is a variant, "Mogford", at both places. The origin of John Mugford of Salem is to be found in the Historical Collections of Essex Institute, XV:17, LDS Film #0253248. He was bp. at Newfoundland, and admitted to the Salem church in the year 1726.His wife, Mary, was admitted to the Salem church 22 May 1726. There was a George Mugford, also of Salem who may have been brother or cousin to John. The wife of John/ 1 Mugford was Mary Liscomb/Luscomb. George Mugford m. Mary Derby at Salem, 11 May 1727 (BMD, 1650-1865, Salem City Clerk), and they had only one child recorded at Salem, George, b. 18 Mar 1727.
