July 4th 1948
There was only one time that my family took of on an unplanned vacation. It was the 4th of July 1948. We all just got in the car (his blue '36 Ford), and my father started driving. There was no plan at all. We headed for 99E on 228 as I recall; it may have been 20. At any rate I recall that we drove past a two story farm house that was on fire. The flames were shooting high into the sky, and there was nothing for the people to do but watch their home burn.
I'm not sure but I seem to recall some car problems in Grass Pants, OR. That could have been another time, but I remember we did go the the Oregon Caves. They wouldn't let us go in because we did not have heavy clothing. Bummer! So it was decided to go to California. We went as far as Santa Cruz, California, before heading home. We won't say anything about the kid that pee'd his pants while sleeping in the car - waiting for the ticket office of the Oregon Caves to open. No; it wasn't Doug or our father.
The photo's that follow were those taken by
my mother (and scattered throughout several photo albums!), on that trip.
Here is her Kodak "Baby Brownie" at work.
