The Class of '57 Had Its Leaders

By Cecil Houk

This is the 7th in a series about The Class of '57, and these people thought they were going to escape my attention. Let's talk about the leaders of The Class of '57 and SHUHS.

To see and read more of my articles about Sweet Home see my I remember ... series.

The 1957 Senior Class Officers

In the photo above, from left to right, the senior class officers were: Alton Doan, Vice President. Jerry Barton and Leon Swank, Sergeants at Arms. Jan Mulholland, Program Chairman. Jackie Fisher, Secretary. Charlene Luttrull Sparrow, Program Co-Chairman. Susan Horner, Treasurer. Annelle Davenport, President.

Of all the people in the Class of '57 Alton Doan is the first and last I have spoken to. We attended Foster School together, but I can't recall if we were both in 1st grade at Foster. I do recall that he lived just a short distance from the school; like 2 or 3 blocks. I was one up on him though in 1956. My mother moved into a house (for the second time, the first being about 1940), just across Long Street from the west end of SHUHS. The only problem was that I was living in Portland at the time.

I spoke with Alton on the phone just a few weeks ago, and it was good to hear his voice again.

It's a good thing Ron didn't loose his foot to that lawn mower! Seems he tried to run it over his foot one day.
Ron Weaver

Vice President:

Royce McDaniel

I first met Royce in 4th grade. Great athlete from the git go!

I doubt John ever set a fire just to test that thing!

Peggy Stokes

Although I did not have the opportunity to vote for this fine group (I attened US Grant HS in Portland my senior year), I can't think of a better selection to lead The Class of '57.
