Our Ancestor Stories from the
Island of Föhr
Simon Nahmen Paulsen was both a captain of a whaling ship in his younger years and then a captain of the cargo ship "Laertes". He made at least two trips to China. The sea log is about one of those trips. He recounts the years away from home while on board the ship on the last leg from home. Once home, he offered to take one of his children on the next voyage. Namine accepted his invitation. Unfortunately, he died on this trip once in China. Interesting, Namine is the only one of the 8 children who did not emigrate to California.
Both the log and the diary are photocopies of photocopies passed through generations of Simon's descendants who emigrated to Lockwood,CA. We are desperately looking for the original manuscript written in German and Frisian with the drawings.
