Illinois (Tazewell County) - Tazewell County Genealogical Society Records - with notes

Everyone has a shoebox with an assortment of buttons, receipts, notes, tickets, etc.--and none of us know what to do with it all. I've put all of these items in the Miscellaneous Section until I can find a proper home for them. Enjoy!

Notes:
St. Mary's Cemetery has three parts, a center area with older monuments and on either side, areas with newer stones. The older and more prominent families have large and decorative stones and obelisks, some made from white marble with extensive engravings. Among these stones are found the surnames Connell, Ryan, McGrath, Twohey, Power, Fitzgerald, etc.

The following three stones were found in a row at the back of the cemetery (walking from the road):

  1. Although the Tazewell County Genealogical Society has described a monument for John Cullinan (1826-1906), I was not able to find it. It is possible that this monument had been significantly damaged by erosion that the engravings were simply worn off.
  2. The place of birth written on the monument for Martin Cullinan (1831-1890) states "Kilgobind, Co. Waterford" in the Tazewell County Genealogical Society Records. When I examined the stone in May 1999, the engraving had worn considerably, which made the inscription nearly illegible. The only place which resembles this spelling is Kilgobinet, County Waterford, a few miles to the north of Dungarvan, County Waterford. The surnames Cullinan and Cullinane are still very common in Dungarvan. The monument is tall--approximately 6" high or more and has a design at different levels, similar to the ornate designs found in the Book of Kells. The monument is made of white marble.
  3. Next to Martin Cullinan's memorial is Patrick Cullinan's monument. This stone is worn considerably with the top part broken off about 1" from the top, laying sideways on the ground--together, this monument would have been about 6" high. The monument is made of white marble.
  4. On the other side of Martin's stone is one which simply reads, "Mary Cullinan Callahan/ October 8 1860 - June 15 1918." This stone is about 4" high and is made of gray/black granite. To the right of this stone is a smaller gray/black granite stone which reads, "William Callahan/ Nov 30 1869 - Nov 16 1931." The latter, presumably, is the husband of Mary Cullinan (1860-1918).
The section on the right as you enter the main entrance to the cemetery has newer burials. The Cullinan plots are almost at the outer extremity of the cemetery and close to the front. In a row are the following monuments:
  1. A raised flatstone, "J. Leo Cullinan/ 1899-1984."
  2. A large (wide) granite monument, with the surname "Cullinan" in the center. Below the surname, the following two engravings are found to the left and right, "Thomas/ 1868-1949" and "Bridget/ 1869-1948" respectively.
  3. A second large granite monument, with the surname "Cullinan" in the center. Below the surname, the following two engravings are found to the left and right, "Lawrence M./ 1896-1976" and "Margaret M./1895-1963" respectively.
  4. A raised flatstone, "Robert L. Cullinan/ Sep 17 1927 - July 14 1977."
