Company B
th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry
(Three Years' Service):
This Regiment was stationed on Camp Wightman, on Long Island in Boston Harbor until May/June of 1861. "... Here on June 11, 1861, the regiment mustered into the service, and on the 25th of the month, it left for the seat of the war. In addition to the national and state colors, it carrid an Irish flag... so severe were its losses at Gaines' Mill and Malvern Hill that the 9th was held in reserve at the Second Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg, and suffered only slight losses in those engagements... Arriving in Boston, June 15, on the 21st of the month, the regiment was mustered out of the service..."

  • Cullinan, John--Private. Residence: New York; 18; shoemaker, enlisted and mustered in, June 11, 1861, killed in action, June 27, 1862 at Gaines' Mill, Virginia.
  • Cullinan, John--Private. Residence: Boston; 28; shoemaker, enlisted and mustered in, August 18, 1862; mustered out June 21, 1864.
  • Cullinan, John W.--Private. Residence: East Abington; 29; laborer, enlisted and mustered in, June 11, 1861; wounded at Gaines' Mill, Virginia, June 27, 1862; appointed Sergeant, September 1, 1863; discharged June 21, 1864. (See Veteran Reserve Corps).

9th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry

  • Cullinane, Patrick--Private. Residence: Boston; 21; shoemaker, enlisted and mustered in, February 4, 1864; wounded May 8 or 12, 1864, at Spottsylvania, Virginia; transferred June 10, 1864, to 32nd Massachusetts Infantry. See Company F, 32nd Massachusetts Infantry.

13th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Reserve Corps.

Cullinan, John C.--Corporal. Company I, 13th VRC. Residence: Credit Orange, Massachusetts; 32; shoemaker, enlisted and mustered in, August 27, 1864, Boston, for 3 years; mustered out November 17, 1865, Boston, Massachusetts, as Sergeant. See Company B, 9th Massachusetts Infantry.

Company F
28th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

  • Cullinan, James--Private. Residence: Roxbury, Massachusetts; 43; labourer, enlisted November 7, 1861; mustered December 13, 1861; discharged for disability, December 29, 1862, Fort Monroe, Virginia.

Company H
26th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

"...Ordered to report to General Butler, the Regiment embarked at Boston, November 19 and on December 3, reached Ship Island in the Gulf of Mexico, where General Butler's forces were being assembled for a movement on New Orleans... Early in January 1864, the regiment removed to Franklin, where, during January and February, 546 men, near two-thirds of the regiment, re-enlisted for the three years. These men were sent home on the 22nd of March and were furloughed until the 4th of May, returning to New Orleans on May 20. After several unimportant transfers, on July 10, it embarked for Bermuda Hundred, Virginia, arriving July 21..."

  • Cullinane, David--Private. Residence: Boston; 37; gardener; enlisted and mustered in, October 23, 1861; re-enlisted January 3, 1864; deserted May 4, 1864, Lowell, Massachusetts.

Company A
28th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

"The 28th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was composed most of men of Irish birth or parentage.... January 11, 1862 to February 14, stationed at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor. Embarked for Hilton Head, South Carolina, arriving February 23; posted on several Islands near the mouth of the Savannah River until June 1, then to Charleston, South Carolina. At James Island, South Carolina, June 16, eight companies were engaged, losing 70 men, of whom 20 were killed or mortally wounded. On July 6, the regiment returned to Hilton Head, South Carolina from whence it was sent to Fort Monroe, arriving July 18..."

  • Cullinane, William--1st Sergeant. Residence: Lynn, Massachusetts; 32; shoemaker; enlisted October 1, 1861; mustered in on December 13, 1861; appointed Sergeant-Major, April 5, 1862; died July 17, 1862, Newport News, Virginia.

Company F
32nd Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

  • Cullinane, Patrick--Private. Residence: Boston; 18; shoemaker; transferred June 9, 1864 from the 9th Massachusetts Infantry; wounded September 30, 1864 at Poplar Spring Church, Virginia; deserted on November 30, 1864. See Company F, 9th Massachusetts Infantry.
