Query from Clark Coleman on 19 Oct 1999:

Researching William Cullinan of Claregalway, Co. Galway, Ireland (1813-1865). He died 19 Apr 1865 in Brown County, Illinois; bur Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery. Married Ann Browne on 1 Oct 1838 Pittsfield, Pike Co., Illinois. She was born in 1816 in Co. Galway; claimed to have immigrated to the US in 1834; d 2 Sep 1892, Macon County, Missouri. Looking to find other relatives of this individual.
Children:

  • Margaret Cullinan, b 3 Sep 1840 Quincy, Adams Co. IL; d 16 Feb 1922 St Louis MO; m 5 Apr 1858 Brown Co. IL to Thomas H. Lynch. Lynch was b 9 May 1833 Galway, Ireland. They had eight children.
  • Anna Marie Cullinan, b 1846 Quincy, Adams Co. IL; d 1862 Brown Co. IL; Died at age 15; bur Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery.
  • Mary Jane Cullinan, b Feb 1848 Quincy, Adams Co. IL; d 12 Apr 1920 San Diego CA; m 1881 to Joseph F. Dessert. Dessert b Jul 1845 Ohio. He was a widower with at least 4 children. They lived in Macon Co, Missouri, then relocated >1910 to San Diego CA. Mary Jane did not have any children of their own; it is possible that they adopted several children. On the 1900 census, a 'daughter' Mary E. Dessert appears for the first time, age 30. In 1910, a 'son', Thomas J. Cullinan appears, age 9.
  • Frances Agnes Cullinan, b Mar 1850 Quincy, Adams Co. IL; d >1920; m 25 Feb 1879 in Witchita KS to Joseph M. Hambaugh. Hambaugh b Jul 1846 in Illinois. His first wife, Josephine Shamp, died at age 19, leaving a son Joseph E. Hambaugh. Frances and Joseph Hambaugh had six children. Before 1900, they moved from Brown Co. IL to San Diego CA.
  • William J. Cullinan, b 1854 Mt. Sterling, Brown Co. IL; d >1892. Living with his mother in the 1880 Census. The Brown County Democrat on 13 Sep 1880 states, "Mr. W.J. Cullinan, who has been resticating amid the lakes of Minnesota for several weeks, returned home on last Thursday." His mother's obituary of 1892 states "William Cullinan of Quincy."
  • Ella Eliza Cullinan, b 10 Aug 1858 Brown Co IL; d 8 Sep 1901 Bevier, Macon Co MO; bur Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery, Brown Co IL. Married Lewis Nolan 14 May 1882 Brown Co IL. Nolan was b Mar 1851 in Illinois. His first wife, Ellen Dunn, d at age 25, leaving a daughter. Ella E. did not have children. Lewis Nolan married (3) Katherine McGoon.
  • Thomas J. Cullinan, b 1859; d 11 Jun 1896 Macon Co MO; bur Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery, Brown Co IL. Next to him is "Sarah, wife of T.J. Cullinan (1864-1903). Thomas Cullinan's obituary from Bevier MO says that he married about a year before he died. The 1900 Census for Macon Co MO shows Sadie Cullinan and a son Thomas J. Cullinan, b Aug 1896. They live with Lewis and Ella (Cullinan) Nolan. Thomas' widow died 3 years later (1899) and I can't find out what happened to their apparent child. He may be the Thomas J. Cullinan living with Joseph F. and Mary Jane Dessert on the 1910 Macon Co. MO census, but he would have been 13, not 9 as shown--and no last name of Cullinan appears. I have been unable to trace this orphan as a Cullinan or Dessert.
