Query from David R. Elliott on September 26, 1997: "I am endeavoring to determine where and when my Great Grandfather, Edward M. Cullinan, was born and who his perents were. Would you please check your records to see if you have come across this relative? I know little about him. He married Mary Stella Dacy in Saint John, New Brunswick in February 1865 and they lived there the rest of their lives. They had four children: Mary, Thomas, James and Edward, my grandfather. My great-grandfather died November 20, 1873 and is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Family folklore has it that he may have been raised along with his younger brothers, Michael and Bernard, by a Mrs. McGovern and that they left at an early age. Supposedly, they walked for three days out of the 'wilderness' to Saint John. It was said that the "wilderness" was somewhere on the Nerepis River. I have some family tree information on my great grandfather's descendants. If it would assist your research, I would be happy to send it. Thank you. David R. Elliott

The other two, James and Patrick Hartnett went to Australia to avoid the Civil War. The South Carolina sons brought their mother (then a widow) to Charleston. Query from Marianne Thompson on 11 Oct 1999: Catherine (Kate) Cullinane was born c1845 in Ireland. In 1866, she was married to John Charles O'Connor in New Orleans, Louisiana. She died of yellow fever ten years later, in 1876. It is possible that she lived in Houston, Texas between 1866 and 1876. When Kate Cullinane and her two sons died, she left two daughters-- Johanna and Annie. Kate also had two sisters, one named Mary and the other named Ann. No other information is known. Catherine is a real mystery to us. Her family disowned her when she married John Charles Connor. Family legend has it that her family were owners or managers for a trolley line on which J.C. Connor was a conductor. They were married the Catholic Church of St. Peter an St. Paul on what is now Burgundy street I visited the church and obtained the mariage and baptismal certificates for the two girls. A Mary Cullinane was a witness for one and Anne Cullinane was a witness for the other. When Catherine died the father placed both girls in a Convent orphanage which I have never been able to locate in N.O. On holidays, the Cullinane family would bring the girls to their fine home in the garden district, she told her daughters that she wished they had adopted she and her sister, but tey never saw them again when her father remarried, took them from the convent andmoved to Houston, TX. I searched all the records of the trolley lines in N.O. when I was there, and could find no Cullinanes mentioned. I thought perhaps her parents had died in Ire. or N.O. and that Kate lived with an older sister and brother in-law, name unknown, who ran or owned the Tolley line. I did find the family of a grocer named William Cullinane on the census of 1850 that you provided on the WONDERFUL Cullinane homepage. While in New Orleans I called the Cullinanes in the phone book. They were lovely people who had been to County Cork Ireland for a visit and found lots of Cullinanes there. One of their ancestors had been in charge of the Port of New Orleans. One had come from out of state, but they were affiliated with railroads. None seemed to have been in New Orleans at the time of the civil war. I presume Kate was born in Ireland about 1843, because that is when John C. Connor was born in Tipperary, Ireland. If the two sons who died of yello fever along with their mother in 1876 were named, I do not know them, because I did not know of their existance until after I visited N.O. I had hopd to find her on a passenger list..but so far have had no luck. I found some Cullinanes listed in N.O. obituaries for late 1800s, but could not connect them. Any help you could give would be much appreciated. The researcher at the New Orleans Public Library could only find what I have told you about. There were so many orphanages, with the yellow fever epidemics and all and it being such a large city, no researcher was able to find Annie and Johanna Connors. I think because Kate died in 1876 and the father remarried by 1880, The only census they would appear on might have been too late for them thave been there. (1880). Any suggestions as to where I cold turn would be much appreciated. I did read somewhere that it was a brother and sister that she came with from Ireland, so if it was a brother-in-law??? I have been unable to trace this orphan as a Cullinan or Dessert.

Ada M Cullinan was my grandmother. She died in 1941 or 1942. I know her father was an older brother of Sir Thomas Cullinan. He was either Peter or Patrick Cullinan (known to all as "The Major"), of Farm Engeland, near Vryburg in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. At one stage he was a transport rider, ferrying supplies from what was then Algoa Bay up to the mines on the Witwatersrand. He was also a stonemason. He was 17 when his father was "killed by natives". During the Boer war he fought for the British, and commanded "Cullinan's horse", I believe. I am keen to track the South African Cullinans, Mossops, Hunts and Tregidgas, and any help would be much appreciated! I have some family photographs which I will scan and email in due course. I am looking for the birth Certificate of Mary Ann Cullinan(or Cullenham or Cullenon) there are many variations on her marriage cert from the witnesses that have sighned it, but I am sure they are related. Her father was Thomas Cullenham, but as you know they spelt the name they way they heard it!!! Mary Ann was born in Castle Street Armagh Northern Ireland. I have written to the Armagh Ancestry and to the public records office in Belfast, and have sent off money that I could not afford and was hoping for the cert that I wanted. Can anybody out there help me and suggest where I look next for my Grandmother's birth certificate? the family cannot help me find it, so it must have been thrown away years ago.

They were married, according to the family bible, in Conard?, NH November 30, 1941. by Rev. McCrackeins? My great grandparents were John Henry Cullinan and Margaret Caroline (Sullivan) Cullinan. They were from St. John NB and are probably buried there. They had 3 daughters: Connie, Donna, and Frances Carmel ( my grandmother) Frances Carmel was born on June 16,1921 and was baptized on June 21,1921 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in St. John. NB Her godparents were Eward Michael Cullinan and Frances Bridget ? (last name not known) Probably some relatives. My great-grandfather John Henry Cullinan may have been shiipped out by the army on Feb. 11, 1916. His birthday may have been August 20, 1894. His mothers name may have been Catherine Cullinan who lived on Cliff St . in St. John. My mother ( Carmel's daughter) told me that her grandfather John Henry Cullinan worked at Sears department store in St. John in the men's wear department. My grandmother, Carmel , married my grandfather, Joseph William Perry on November 23, 1938 at the Cathedral in ST. John, they were later divorced , also in St. John I believe. My grandparetns Carmel and Joseph William are both now deceased, Joseph WIlliam is buried in Kitchener, Ontario and I belive Carmel died in ST. John sometime in the 1970's. I don't know where she is buried or the date of her death. Nor do I know anything else about the family line of John Henry Cullinan or his wife Margaret Caroline (Sullivan) Cullinan. Any help would be appreciated.

My Great Grandfather was Patrick Cullinan. He was the son of Michael Cullinan and Katherine ( ? ). Patrick came to the United States and to North Adams, Massachusetts around 1872. He married Mary E. Hanley in June of 1876. Their first two children died but on June 7, 1879 my Grandfather John E. Cullinan was born. On October 2, 1879 Patrick died in an accident at the age of 29 leaving his Widow, his young son of 4 months, and his family history untold. Over the past few years I have found that in Arlington, Vermont which is about 25 miles north of North Adams, Massachusetts there were several Cullinan's, about 35 to be exact. These Cullinan's came from Waterford County, Ireland to Canada, and down to Vermont. My Patrick was the only Cullinan in North Adams when he married in 1876 and his son was the only one there till about 1890 when some of the ones in Vermont came there. I feel that my Patrick who was the only one in North Adams must have some connection to those in Vermont but I have not been able to link him to them. If I was able to link him them he would have been from Waterford County also. This site shows under the church records a Michael Cullinan and a Katherine Keating having two children in the mid 1860's in Rathgormick, Waterford County, Ireland. The Vermont Cullinan's were from Rathgormick. My Patrick could possibly fall as an older child to Michael Cullinan and Katherine Keating. All this is only speculation though so if there is anyone out there that could possible find an answer just let me know. Thanks to everyone

I'm looking for info on a John McMahon & his wife. Her Obit. appeared Feb. 24 1940 and states- DEATH OF MRS. JOHN M'MAHON, BALLY-CALLA the above widely-esteemed lady passed quietly away at her residence on Friday evening, after a protracted illness, at the mature age of 78years. Her many good qualities had endeared her to large numbers throughout the neighbourhood . She belonged to the proud lineage of the cheiftain M'Mahons of Clare, and was one of the few of her name, who could trace her descent from the reowned Marshal M'Mahon. The funeral took place on Sunday to the family burial ground in Kilmilevy and was largely attended. I am looking for relatives of them and to find out anything about them. They would have been born around 1860's. I'm also trying to find where the family burial plot would be. I'm trying to find living relatives also of this family.

Hello, I'm trying to help my husband research his fathers side of the family. All we know is that Thomas Patrick Cullinan was born 03/09/1921 and died sometime in April 1967. He lived in the NIagara Falls NY area at the time of his death. We have been unable to locate his obituary - and as we don't know where he was born we don't know where to start with locating a birth certificate. Rumor is he or his parents were possibly from Clare County, Ireland?? My husband was only 3 at time he died. Nobody else in family seems to have much information. He had three children, Robert Cullinan, Evelyn Cullinan and Jack Cullinan. We do know that he served in the Korean War and was a Purple Heart recipient. We have located his SS number and have requested military records. Would like to find out if there were siblings, who his parents were, etc.. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. I ran across the following names in the old records of Trinity Church in New York City. Although I found these names sporadically through the 1780's, the "Cullinan" surname doesn't show up again until later in the next century with the first big wave of famine immigrants. New York was occupied by the British during this time, so it's possible that this family was loyalist and evacuated the city, along with many other Loyalist families at some point after it was returned to the Continental government. But most of these Loyalist families left New York prior to "Evacuation Day" (November 25, 1783). With the name showing up into 1785, they don't exactly fit that mold, so it's possible that they weren't loyaists. If they did leave, it's likely that they went to Canada. If not, they don't seem to have stayed in New York. Has anyone found Cornelius in their search? I have had no luck finding any information on his Irish birth or marriage. He had several children, one being my great grandfather Patrick Cullinane b. c1841 Cork we think. Cornelius and his family left Ireland around the 1850s they show up on the 1851 Census for Glamorgan, South Wales. There are several Cullinane families that must have came over at the same time, Jeremiah, William, Timothy, Charles then the ladies are Margaret Callinan and EllenCallnan. My own great grandfather, Patrick, married in 1864 and his name is spelt as Calnan, as the children were baptiszed/registered they had variants on the name including Calnon, Calanan, Calnin and the one my family ended up with Caldon. This seems to have been due to the accents and not being able to read or write. They relied on the priests to spell the names correctly, unfortunatley, at the time there was a Polish priest, can you imagine all those accents, Welsh, Irish and Polish trying to work out what was being said. Patrick's brother Daniel c. 1839 Cork, did end up with Cullinane as his surname. Which seems odd to me, but I am still trying to get to the bottom of it. There are other branches to the clan still Celtic but Welsh this time. I would appreciate any help given. Many thanks, Cathy

Patrick Dineen, He was born in1867 in Ardfert, county Kerry, Ireland. His father's name was Daniel Dineen and his mother's name was Catherine Reardon. He was baptists in Diocese: Ardfert and Alhadoe, on March 4 1867. There was a Minister by the name of John Murphy cc and a Clergyman by the name of Patrick Barton pp. His sponser's were John Dineen and Mary Readon. He came to the United States, some where between 1885- because he became a US citizen on October 12, 1891 in the county court of Kings County, at Brooklyn, N.Y. We know his first wife's name was Mary (do not know last name) they had three children: Frances, Charles, and William Dineen. Mary died in 1918, we think from the flu and was buried in Calvary and Allied Cemeteries in N.Y. We think her son Frances was buried in the same cemetary in 1919. My great-grandfather worked for: The city of NY Department of Sanitation. Patrick died in September 1961, he was about 94 years old. His funeral was at A. Castka/Bellmore Funeral Home. His last address was: 423 Frankel Blvd. Merrick, NY. We are despartely looking for any information we can get about any relatives of his and any more info about Patrick and where he arrived at and from what ship and his first wife's maiden name.

They would have been living in or near Miltown, Castlefreke - based on family info / or possibly nearby in Kilkerran (based on info I received from the priest in Ardfield Rathbarry) John Hayes was a Farmer. John and Mary's children were: My Great Grandfather, Patrick Hayes who was born about 1877 in Clonakilty / Castlefreke Ireland and moved to Liverpool when he was about 20 years old. Johannah Hayes (b. abt 1874, lived in Cork was married to an O'Sullivan) John Hayes (was born bet 1868-70 and was sent to live with relatives in Australia when he was 13) Ellen aka "Ellie" (born abt 1872 and was sent to live with relatives in Australia when she was 11) Thomas Hayes (b 11 March 1880) moved to the UK and lived for a little while with Patrick and then moved to Canada. He died in 1917 in WW1 as a member of the Irish Fusiliers - from Canada). We believe Mary Callanan was a second marriage and that John's first wife had died. We believe the children from John's first marriage were: James Patrick Hayes (b. 1851Clonakilty or thereabouts: James Patrick went to Australia) Bartholomew Hayes (went to the US) Mary Ann Hayes (b. abt 1858 / moved to Australia) Margaret Hayes (b. abt 1863 Moved to Australia) Although maybe Margaret or Mary Ann were Mary's daughters too.. Also, there may have been more children.... We think it is possible that Mary Callanan died around 1883 as this is the year that Ellie and John were sent to Australia and they always said it was because they were orphaned (not sure if just one or both parents died - maybe it was John...). We're not sure who would have taken care of Patrick and Thomas before they moved to the UK. If you have any records about Mary Callanan and her family I would be delighted to hear from you. The family Donnellan came out to New Zealand in and about 1850/60s ?and settlrd at Temuka or Pleasant Point just north of Timaru in the South Island. I always had thought the name was spelt Donallan but there id nothing of that name in the surnames of County Clare. One of the daughters married a Beckingham in Timaru who were furniture makers at that time. I can just remember her being called "Grannie Beck" and she was so old and I was about 5 when she died. I was born 1942. The Beckingham family then lived at 35 Parkview Terrace in Timaru. The Donnellans were evidently a large family as probably all were at that time. I don't know what the Donnellans worked at but the area is and still is a farming area. Would be interested in any replies.

Perhaps it was for convalescence, or perhaps he wished to die surrounded by landscape that he loved?

My great grandmother Mary Marg Dornan was sent as a Home Child to live with the Cullinan family of St. John N.B...............folklore says they owned a shop in the city and that they never officially adopted her. However, searching the 1901 census: we find no Mary Dornan of the appropriate age. We only find a Mary "Cullinan" of nearly the exact age living with Micheal and Johanna Cullinan and no other children. Would this be one and the same? Mary Dornan eventually married Patrick Griffith of St. John N.B. She was around 5 years old when she arrived in St. John. Ships records say that the ship left Liverpool and stopped in Londonderry. Her name does not appear until the stop in Londonderry but she seems to "belong" to the group of children coming from Liverpool. We are trying to find out whether she is actually Irish or English to find her actual family. Does anyone know the Cullinan story of taking in a Home Child from Britain? who could shed light on this matter? Thanks:
