Obituary: Lady Frances Elizabeth (Harding) Cullinan of South Africa

A Correspondent Writes

The death occurred at her home in Johannesburg on December 23 of Lady Cullinan in her 97th year. She was the widow of Sir Thomas Cullinan, D.S.O., first chairman of the Premier Diamond Mine, after whom the Cullinan Diamond was named. It was presented to King Edward VII by the Transvaal and now adorns the Crown Jewels. Lady Cullinan was born in Dortrecht, Cape Colony, the daughter of an 1820 settler. On her mother's side she was related to Dick King, the hero of the famous ride from Durban to Grahamstown to seek aid for the relief of the beleaguered British garrisons.

Lady Cullinan was associated with Johannesburg from the earliest days and was held in great respect and affection by all who knew her. Four sons and four daughters and innumerable grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive her.
