Late Mrs. Williams Was Honored by Pope Pius XIIThe death of Mrs. Mary Edna Williams, widow of
Sitting Magistrate Ervin E. Williams, occurred April 13 in St. Joseph's Hospital.
Mrs. Williams was a daughter of
the late Hugh A. and Mary Ann (Leahy) Dever, a well-known North End family, and for the last 25 years she was a
member of the Cathedral Parish.
She was a member of the Altar Society of St. Ann and of the Propagation of the
Faith Society of the Cathedral parish.
In August, 1958, the Cross "Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice" was conferred upon
Mrs. Williams, for outstanding service to the Catholic Church, by the late Pope Pius XII.
Surviving are two sons,
Rev. F. Ervin Williams, CSsR, London, Ont., and Cpl. David E. Williams, in Germany; five daughters, Mrs. J.F.
Cullinan, Ottawa; Mrs. E.S. Murnaghan, Toronto; Mrs. J.J. Beaton, Halifax; Sister M. Ervin, Mount Carmel Convent,
Saint John; Sister M. Christopher, Venosta, Que., and eight grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Frederick
W. Dever, and four sisters, Miss Alice M. Dever, Miss Agnes G. Dever, Mrs. J. Urban Estey, all of Saint John. The
late James B. Dever was a brother.
Several nephews and nieces also survive. One of the nieces is Sister M. Ann
Michael [Sister Ann Dever] of the Sisters of Charity, St. Peter's Convent, Saint John.
The funeral was held April
15 from the residence, 382 Union Street, to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception where Solemn High Mass of
Requiem was celebrated by her son, Rev. Ervin Williams, CSsR.
Rev. Thomas O'Brien, CSsR, was deacon and Rev.
Joseph C. Floyd was sub-deacon. The absolution was pronounced by Most Rev. A.B. Leverman, Bishop of Saint
John.
Also in the sanctuary were Very Rev. Raymond Fitzgerald, CSsR; Rev. Patrick Mann, CSsR; Rev. H.
MacGillivray, CSC; Very Rev. J.M. Gallagher, V.G.; Rev. John Keogh, CSsR; Rev. Joseph B. Ward, Rev. Frederick C.
Carney, Rev. Donald Warner, Rev. A.C. MacDonald, Rev. V. Murnaghan of St. Dunstan's University, Charlottetown; Rev.
R.J. Stack, Rev. J. Murphy, Rev. S. Brennan, Rev. E.E. O'Leary, Rev. John Mooney and Rev. Wilfred
Mallette.
Interment was in St. Joseph's Cemetery with prayers at the grave by Father Williams assisted by
priests.
