Ex-Principal
Sister M. Irene Cullinane, O.S.B., superior and principal of the Bender Memorial Academy from 1930
to 1937 and a former teacher at St. Genevieve's and Sacred Heart schools, died this morning in St. Elizabeth
Hospital following a long illness.
Sister Irene had been stationed at the Benedictine Mother House, 851 North
Broad Street, since she retired from active teaching duties a year ago. Previous to that, she had been at St.
Genevieve's School for three years.
Born in Elizabeth, February 5, 1873, she was the daughter of Dominic and
Ellen Healy. She entered the Benedictine Order May 1, 1896. She taught at Sacred Heart School from 1900 to 1907
and later from 1926 to 1930 and also at St. Henry's School, Bayonne, and Immaculate Conception School,
Hackensack.
Survivors are a brother, Jeremiah Cullinane, of Elizabeth; a sister, Miss Catherine Cullinane, of
Newark, and several nephews.
The funeral will be held from the Mother House.
