"Despite his parents objections, Denis O'Hara volunteers his
services to the IRA after witnessing British aggression in his small
village of Clonmore. Denis's girlfriend, Moira is left alone to ward off
the lustful advances of Beecher a seedy poitin maker and informer.
Beecher eventually succeeds in getting Moira into his house where he
imprisons and attempts to rape her. However she is saved by Denis's
intervention and the two return home to marry. Irish Destiny is the first
fictionalized account of the War of Independence and the last silent film
to be produced in Ireland [...] A love story constructed around the
events of the war, the film incorporates actuality footage of the black
and tans, the burning of Cork City and of the Customs house, while there
is also a reconstruction of the mass escape from the Curragh. These
events however, are not presented in chronological order. The release of
Irish Destiny coincided with the tenth anniversary of the war and was
enthusiastically received by an Irish audience but was one of only five
films to be banned by the British Board of Censors in 1926. The film was
re-cut minus all the scenes from the Black and Tans and re- released
under the title of Mother Ireland in 1928. (Taken from "Irish
Destiny," by the Irish Film Board.)

"Home News" - Death of Mr. Cullinan - "Francis X.
Cullinan, Second Year Philosopher, was on a picnic with four companions
on September 25th. After their lunch about a camp-fire, he walked with a
companion some twenty yards or so up-river, to the beach below the
cascades. His companion expressed his intention of lying down for a short
rest at the edge of the woods that fringe the beach. Mr. Cullinan said he
also would rest, but on the open beach in the sun, and later might take a
swim. At about 5pm, when the picknickers assembled to return home, he was
missed. His clothes were found on the beach near the woods. At 8.00
o'clock his body was recovered from the river, some ten yards off the
beach, in a deep pocket of water. First aid was applied, but at 8.20,
Doctor Shipley arrived while the community was reciting the rosary, and
pronounced him dead of a cerebral hemorrhage. The body was carried to
Mariottsville, thence to the Woodstock station on a hand car, thence to
the house. The funeral was held on Sept. 28th. --- On September 25th,
1618, St. John Berchmans finished his Novitiate and took his vows. Thus
Mr. Francis X. Cullinan, a very close imitator of this great Saint, was
called, we trust, to a happy eternity on the anniversary of his patron's
vow-day." [Taken from: "The Woodstock Letters, A Record";
Vol. LIX, Woodstock College, 1930.]

My greatgrandfather, James Joseph Cullinan (his Mom was a McMahon) was
born around 1866 and was a General in the British Army with many
decorated medals that we still have in the family. He came over to

Margaret Houlihan of County Limerick. Cannot find any references to this

Notes:
In reading Family Mystery No. 16, I noticed that Ellen Callinan lived at
No. 3 Trinity Place, in Dublin, which means that at the time of her
letter, she would have been a close neighbour of my ancestor Bartholomew
Fallon, who lived at No. 6 Trinity Place. While I can add nothing to help
solve the mystery, I can tell you a little about Trinity Place, a street
which no longer exists, for your possible interest.
Trinity Place was a court of 21 elegant townhouses built during the
eighteenth century, and located off Dame Lane, between Trinity Street and
Great George Street South, in the heart of Dublin, and just steps away
from Trinity College, Dublin Castle, and the Irish Parliament Buildings.
After the Act of Union was passed in 1801, most of the original owners
moved away, and by the time of Ellen's letter in 1842, the majority of
the 21 houses had become multi family tenement houses.
While the 1851 Census records did not survive, an enumerator's re-cap for
the Heads of Households in Trinity Place has survived, and indicates
that Ellen Callinan no longer lived there, but six other families were
living in that particular house by this time.
In 1879 The Corporation of Dublin targetted small courts with narrow
approaches, such as Trinity Place, as candidates for removal, due to
unsanitary conditions, and Trinity Place was dismantled ca. 1880. A
Theatre Company now occupies the land.
As mentioned, this does nothing to help solve your mystery, but since
during my research your reference to Trinity Place was the only
acknowledgement found that such a street ever existed, thought I would
add this information.
My compliments on an excellent website.

Sister Patricius Cullinane OSF was a member of the School Sisters of St.

both taught at schools in Chicago, Sr. Patrcius (whose birth name was
Patricia) at Alvernia High School and at St. Benedict's High School.

Immediately upon his murder, there was an anti-Irish back-lash which
could be felt all the way to the U.S. and Ireland. McGee was considered
to be among the noble Irishmen in Canada, and projected a positive image
for many of Canadian-Irish to emulate. A short while later, Whelan was
apprehended and was taken to the County Gaol to await trial. In the days
which ensued, what he didn't know was that Andrew Cullinan (1836-
1905) was sitting in the next cell. Cullinan was Chief Detective of
Montreal and was called to Ottawa to investigate this notorious murder;
Cullinan was also fluent in gaelic, and listened quietly as Whelan began
to spell out the details of the murder to some of his friends, who were
also arrested. Cullinan's testimony was among the unmitigating
factors which lead to the public hanging of Timothy Patrick Whelan--which
was also the last public hanging in Canada. The Gaol house now houses an
International Youth Hostel.

Michael, a quick follow up to my message to you of a few days ago. You
BADLY need to correct the info on Tommy Cullinan (no 18), the famous
jockey because it is at present completely misleading. In 1930, within
the space of a few weeks, he won 1) the Champion Hurdle, 2) the
Cheltenham Gold Cup and 3) the Grand National!!! He is the ONLY jockey in
national hunt history to do this!
No 14. John Kirkpatrick Cullinan, my great uncle, was
born in 1879 and died in 1946.
No 13.The bank I used to work for was the Charterhouse Bank NOT the
Chartered Bank.

I am sure if he were alive today he would know a lot about that period,

On this Remembrance Day I have been putting the contents of a diary that
belonged to a British Red Cross nurse serving in France throughout 1918
on to cd rom. One entry is relevant to all those Australians who never
made it home.
November 4 1918
The deaths from pneumonia following flu are appalling.2 or 3 are lying
dead in the ward at the same time. It's pathetic today, one out and
go straight to lay another out. Such young boys too,it breaks my heart.
Hopkins, such a handsome Australian boy died this a.m. When I went to say
goodnight to him last evening, before going off duty,he gave me such a
sweet smile and asked me to kiss him before I went. I said I could not,as
so many of the boys all round could see me, and he said 'Oh you are
shy'.I should love to have kissed him as I knew he was dying but I
dare not.The poor boy said 'you are quite right to keep your kisses
for your own boy' and gave me such a lovely smile. I came off duty
quite miserable and thought about him all night and kept wishing that I
could have kissed him, he was so VERY far from home.
I went to see him as soon as I went on duty next morning but his bed was
empty. He had died at 3.0am. I wish I could have been with him. His pal
told me he had been talking to him about me,and said I had saved his
life. He could not have known he was going to die. Poor boy, such a
handsome big fellow. I cannot forget him'.
Those thoughts are as real now as they were 85 years ago. I shall make
sure that my children in turn will not forget him and all those like him.

In Bansha cemetery is buried Charles Cullnan [Quillinan] of Bansha d.
June 27, 1872 aged 48 years and his wife Catherine nee Walshe d. July 8,
1882 aged 56 years.
This Charles then was b. c. 1824 and the only one that fits well would be
Charles the son of Charles Quillinan and Mary Ryan of Cloonlusk, Doon who
was b. 1/4/1824.
I found Catherine or Johanna Quillinan from Bansha who married James
Leahy. Charles Quillinan & Catherine Walshe's children had Leahy
sponsors which may mean Catherine/Johanna and Charles are siblings.

Bray, Co Wicklow, on or about Sept 10 1916. Moved to London UK in 1952,
with sister Rita. He is my father and his last known address was in

Dad, and where he may have moved, I would love to hear from them. He lost
touch with the family and I moved to America.. Thank

Sound familiar? I am sure every Irish family has at least one or two
Michael Cullinans somewhere in their family! You could be a first or
second cousin?

Illinois buried these inmates? If so, could you tell the most likely
cemetery?
Also, were the people acutally insane or just too poor to be place

Patrick Cullinan (Cleveland, Ohio, 1880) was born 6 May 1842, County
Clare? Ireland. He first arrived in the United States in July 1859. The
only ships record I have found to date that matches this information is
for the "City of Baltimore", landing in the Port of NY. If
this is the correct Pat Cullinan, he is travelling with a possible
sister, Bridget Cullinan, who is one year older than Pat. He also had a
sister Mary (age, location unknown) and a brother whose name may have
been Michael.
Patrick married Elizabeth Myers, probably in Canton, Ohio, sometime
around 1876. Their children were Mary E. (b 1877), William A. (b 1878),
Charles V. (b 1887), Joseph E., and Margaret A.
