County Kilkenny, Ireland

Below is a sampling of a few of the families which have been identified (the branches for this county are too numerous to list). If you would like to add your family links to this page, you may do so by writing a note to the author.

Kilkenny - 1784
There was a sizeable Cullinan family in County Kilkenny, however, I have been unable to thrash out the connections between this branch. I am also unable to find any living relatives of this branch of the Cullinans. The earliest records I have are of a Joseph Cullinan who was an apothecary in Kilkenny, who married "Miss Susannah Anderson, daughter of the late Henry Anderson of Dunbell, Esq." (The Dublin Hibernian Journal, November 24, 1784). No Plate.

Johnstown - 1865-1867
There are four baptisms in Johnstown, Co. Kilkenny which list Cullinans and Cullinanes.
James and Sally (née Brophy) Cullinan had a daughter, Catherine, baptized May 1, 1865.
John and Margaret (née Brophy) Cullinane had two daughters, Catherine (baptized December 19, 1865) and Maria (baptized February 25, 1867). John and Mary (née Drennan) Cullinane had a daughter, Mary, baptized December 6, 1866. No Plate.

Gowran - 1865-1866
Michael and Margaret (née Dullard) Cullinan had two children: Anastatia Cullinan (baptized September 5, 1865) and Kate Cullinan (baptized September 1, 1866). The children were both baptized at Gowran, Co. Kilkenny. No Plate.

Castlecomer - 1864
Mary Cullinan was baptized on January 27, 1864 at Castlecomer, County Kilkenny. She was the daughter of John Cullinan and Ellen Ryan. No Plate.

Co. Kilkenny - 1852
John and Ann Cullinan arriived on the Ship "Theodore" in December 1852 at the Port of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The records state that John and Ann were 24 and 25 years old respectively, Roman Catholic in religion and unable to read or write. It is not known at this time if they had any children and it is not yet possible to determine if they were a married couple or siblings. No Plate.

Ballynagget / Freshford - 1819
There is a record of an Alexander Cullenan of Ballynagget, Co. Kilkenny, marrying a Miss Fitzpatrick of Freshford, Co. Kilkenny. (The Clonmel Advertiser, June 23, 1819). It is possible that Alexander Cullenan was related to a James Cullenan, M.D., who was from Freshford, Co. Kilkenny as well. I found James' records with the Kirkpatrick Papers, at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ireland on Kildare Street, Dublin. James graduated at St. Andrew's Medical College in 1822, and then matriculated in Dublin in 1927. James died on August 27, 1869 in Freshford, Co. Kilkenny. In addition to these two pieces of information, there is a record of a marriage between Nicholas Brenan (d 1799) and Elizabeth Cullinan, daughter of James Cullinan of Conahy House, County Kilkenny. It is likely that this James Cullinan was the doctor. Nicholas and Elizabeth had three children. No Plate.
