UPLEADON, formerly LEDENE, is a parish and village to Newent union, containing by the census of 1861, 237, and in 1871, 245 inhabitants, and 1207 acres; in the northern division of the deanery of the Forest, archdeaconry of Gloucester, diocese of Gloucester and Bristol, hundred of Botloe, West Gloucestershire; 2 miles east from Newent, 7 north-west from Gloucester, 9 south-west from Tewekesbury, and 9 south-east from Ledbury on the west bank of the river Leadon, and on the road from Tewekesbury to Newent. The vicarage in the incumbency of the Rec. G. J. Gray Lawson, M.A., is valued at £180 per annum, with residence and 48 acres of glebe land, and is in the patronage of the Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are appropriators of the rectorial tithes. The church is a small ancient edifice, in the Norman style, consisting of nave, chancel, and south porch, with tower and two bells; the tower is constructed of wood and plaster. There is a Saxon arch in the church and a Norman doorway, the latter supposed to be of the 11th century. There is a stained glass window in the east end. The chancel was restored by a former curate of the parish, and is built in the style of a Swiss chalet. Some considerable iron forges formerly existed here, but they are now converted into a flour mill.
