FAMIY TREE DNA KIT

Ordering Your DNA Kit:

You may order a DNA Kit by notifying the project administrator, or one Green DNA Image can be ordered directly from FamilyTree DNA. The current cost, if you order through the BARD Family DNA Study administrator, is the group-discounted rate of $99. Your payment, sent along with the invoice, is due when you mail your DNA sample to the FamilyTree DNA lab. You may send a personal check, or you may use a credit card when you request your kit. The entire fee goes to the laboratory, the BARD Study and its administrator do not profit financially from your participation, but we would appreciate it if you could patronize Bard's Corner and OldAndRareBooks.com, our sales pages, to help us offset our Web and various other genealogy expenses.

What's in the Kit:

The FT-DNA kit contains an Instruction Sheet, a Release Sheet to be signed, two tiny bottlesFamilyTree DNA Test Kit Image containing a soap solution, (preservative type solution), and two "cheek scrapers." An invoice and a self-addressed mailing envelope is also enclosed.

How the Sample is Taken:

The cheek scraper is about the size of an ordinary Q-tip. You remove the scraper from the sterile package and then scrape the inside of you cheek for about 60 seconds. Then the end of the scraper is ejected into the small glass bottle containing a soapy solution. Eight hours later, you do the same thing with the second scraper and bottle. The two bottles, your check and signed release is then mailed to the Texas laboratory.

Then You Wait!:

It requires from five to seven weeks to process your sample and notify you of your Y chromosome Green Spiral DNA Image scores. A copy of your report will also be mailed to the administrators of the BARD Family DNA Surname Study. We will then ask you for data about your earliest 4 generations of ancestors and their migration pattern. This data will then be posted onto the Internet website. However, your name and FT-DNA code number will not be reported (your privacy will be protected).

Your Report:

Your report will show twelve (12) loci or markers from the Y chromosome. It is possible to get an additional thirteen (13) loci [total of 25, also called a "refinement" or "high resolution test"] from your original DNA sample, but there would be an added charge. Read the technical reports for more details.
