Richard Bard, son of Archibald Beard (or Bard) was born Feb. 8, 1736, and died Feb. 22, 1799; he married Catharine Poe on Dec. 22, 1756; they had 11 children; he, his wife (born June 3, 1737, died Aug. 31, 1811), and their son John were captured by a band of 19 Delaware Indians on April 13, 1758; John was killed in the raid. Richard escaped on the fifth day. Injured and in fear of his recapture, he had to eat rattlesnake and bark to survive a nine-day ordeal. Two years and five months later his wife was freed after a ransom was paid. (See: Catharine's Spoon). About 1764 he lived on "the Bard Plantation" near East Conococheague River in Peters township, Franklin County, Pa. In 1777 he purchased 300 acres in Mt. Pleasant township, which later became part of Westmoreland County, Pa. In 1780 he purchased 2,000 acres near what later became Salem, Ky., and is now Bardstown, Ky. He served in the Revolutionary War with Capt. Joseph Culbertson's Marching Company (1777) at the Philadelphia Campaign, and with Capt. Walter McKinnie's Ranging Company on the western frontier. As a member of the Pennsylvania Convention of 1787, to which the new U.S. Constitution had been submitted, he refused (as an antifederalist) to sign the ratification; "His opposition to the Federal Constitution, before and after its ratification, had a disastrous effect upon Mr. Bard's political fortunes." He was also a member of the Harrisburg Convention of 1788. "He died intestate and was buried in the Presbyterian graveyard at Church-hill [Pa.]. After his death his three farms were sold, his heirs joining in the deeds. His personal estate was appraised at 362 pounds, 6 shillings, 7 pence. His four slaves were an important part of his assets -- Jack being valued at 50 pounds; Alexander, 45 pounds; Shaney, 45 pounds; and Bob, 50 pounds." Richard Bard and his wife Catharine (Poe) Bard had eleven children: John Bard, Isaac Bard, Mary Bard, Archibald Bard, Olivia Bard, Thomas Bard, William Bard, Elizabeth Bard, Margaret Bard, Catharine Bard, Martha Bard. - (BB Pg 159-200)

His arguments to the court were cogent, and free from prolixity and redundancy. His addresses before a jury were eloquent ..."; "In politics Mr. Bard was a Whig, but he was never an aspirant for political office. In 1839, when he was only thirty years old, and the public school system was in its infancy, he was elected a member of the Chambersburg school board, and he was chosen Chief Burgess of the borough in 1847. In 1850, he was nominated for Congress by the Whigs, his successful competitor being his former law partner, James X. McLanahan. The campaign of that year was conducted on the race issue. Poor white men were asked to remember that if they did not wish to become the companions of negroes ... they must vote for James X. McLanahan"; a newspaper favoring McLanahan asked, "If Mr. Bard would have voted against the measure ... is not this evidence that he is opposed to having the slaves taken back, that he wishes them to remain among us?"; "Mr. Bard was a man of strong convictions, with the courage to avow them. He was conspicuous as an influential and consistent advocate of temperance at a time when opposition to the Rum Power and the Slave Power were alike regarded as a species of fanaticism"; Robert McFarland was married Feb. 12, 1839, to Elizabeth Smith Little (born Dec. 12, 1813, died Dec. 7, 1881), he and his wife had four children, including Thomas Robert Bard.
