This original Bard Book belonged to Sen. Thomas Robert Bard, and has many annotations in the margins. Sen. Bard was responsible for the commission of G. O. Seilhamer to research and compile The Bard Family volume. This original was passed down from generation to generation.

Asher Humphrey BARD bought it from a Boston bookstore in the 1950s. Passed to his son Richard Albert BARD. To be passed to his son Ryan Thomas BARD. This book is signed by Sen. Thomas Robert BARD. It has a note to a Presbyterian minister in Ireland, which reads;

Richard Albert Bard richbard@aol.com of Miami Florida had a close encounter of the Bard kind during his recent sighting (1999) of this original Bard Book in the Library of Congress in Washington, DC.

Marilee is a Bard of "Carroll's Delight" through Archibald's 3rd son Rev. David Bard... "I am the granddaughter of Catharine Poe Moore, on page 298 of "The Bard Family" book. This original book has been in my family since its publication in 1908. The book says that 300 copies were printed. This one is not numbered. I did speak to you a few years ago. I was interested in purchasing the newer book. This one is well read. My father's brother is Peter Sroufe. I am very interested in buying the new book. Please e-mail me and let me know the best way to do so.

A friend bought this original, unnumbered book for him at an antique book store near Los Angeles, CA. The pages were still intact, not cut, from the printer. Patrick is a Bard of "Carroll's Delight" through William BARD, second son of Archibald, as mentioned on page 263. William BARD's youngest son, Isaac, was born in Nelson Co, KY, Jan 13, 1797 became a Presbyterian minister in 1823 and moved to Muhlenberg Co, Ky. He married Matilda Miranda MOORE, Mar 15, 1827 and had 5 children...daughter Verona Mary BARD married Carroll LARKINS, page 270. He would like to share his LARKINS data with others. He also has data on the KINCAID family... "Mrs. BARD was a sister of Capt. Joseph KINCAID,
who was killed at the battle of Blue Lick.".. BB page 267.

 
Passed from her mother in 1993. Inside it has a stamp from the Santa Barbara Historical Society Library "Withdrawn". Her mother probably purchased it from a book sale that she used to work for in Santa Barbara. Koko OSWALD will pass it to her oldest son Ted WILLIAMS. Koko is a Bard

Passed from her mother in 1993. "R Bard" is written on the inside cover. On page 159 her mother's handwriting states that Richard BARD (of Indian fame) is her (mother's) great, great grandfather. Koko OSWALD will pass it to her youngest son Chad Poe OSWALD. Koko is a Bard of "Carroll's

We don't appear to descend from Archibald BEARD (BARD) & Co., but I'll give you a few names and dates, and hopefully somebody will recognize something. My mother's father was Junius Theodore Stagg BARD, b 12 Jan 1853 in New York, NY, d 14 Oct 1930 in Millerton, NY. He had seven children. His father was James Mackie BARD, b 01 Aug 1813 in either Philadelphia, PA or New York, NY, d 06 Oct 1874 in Pleasantville, NY. He had eight children. And his father, who also had eight children, was James BARD, b 1778 in Belmont, Ireland, and d 1827? in either Philadelphia or New York. We don't know anything about his father or any of his other ancestors or siblings other than somebody's note that his ancestors were supposed to have been French Huguenots who went to Ireland at the time of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685). James came to America and worked as a shoemaker. He married Isabella McNICHOL on 09 Mar 1808 in New York, NY. The names of their children were Maria (b 1809), Ann Eliza (b 1811, died in childhood), James Mackie (b 1813), John (b 1815), William Henry Heborn (b 1818), Mary Romeyn (b 1820), Samuel (b 1823), and a second Ann Eliza (b 1825). This information comes from compilations by various descendants, and I'm not sure of the validity of any of it. Can anybody help me go back further?"

This reprint was purchased from this Bard family Web site February, 1998. It will be used to research the BARD and POE family genealogies. Mr. Poe is interested in contacting anyone with information about the various POE families., and specifically about his line which includes his great-grandfather Allen POE, Allen POE's father James Alexander POE (b. abt. Sep 3, 1923 in Indiana), and Jame's father Alexander POE (m. Frances HALLIDAY), and Alexander's father John POE.

This reprint was purchased from this Bard family Web site for research into the HAMILTON, POTTER, and BEARD (BARD) families. These two families apparently had close affiliations (if not kinship) in the old days: "My 6th great-grandfather, John HAMILTON, b. 1704 who m(1) Isabella POTTER is believed to be descended from the original John "of Hamilton's Bawn" (see pp. 299-311, but especially 311), as may have been Capt. Hance HAMILTON, who is described on p. 154 as "Nearly allied with the Hamilton's of the Bawn". Isabella P. HAMILTON died shipboard upon arriving in Delaware Bay. When John & Isabella P. HAMILTON's son died, he was buried at Archibald BEARD's in Miln Creek Hundred (p. 302), so there apparently was also a close BEARD/HAMILTON connection in this regard. This same John HAMILTON, b. 1704, m(2) Jane ALLEN and their only child, my 5th grt-grandfather, was "Capt. John HAMILTON of Fermanagh". He settled first in the Juniata region then relocated to Harrisburg, purchasing land from John Harris and erecting the first brick house there. Hamilton Street in Harrisburg is named after his family. I am a 3rd great-grandson of Adam Boyd HAMILTON (a grandson of Capt. John HAMILTON of Fermanagh), who published the "Hamilton Family Record" in Harrisburg in 1874." Other relevant pages in the Bard Book are; p. 146, 153, 154.

This Bard Book reprint was purchased by Margaret in March of 1998, to do research into the connection between the ADAMS family and the BARD family. She would appreciate any info available concerning this branch of the family. She is a Bard of "Carroll's Delight," through first son Richard BARD, via his daughter Elizabeth Bard MCKINNIE. She has been to the Bard Mill (Virginia Mill) area, and relates that there is little left of the mill after the passage of over 240 years.

Gillan, secretary of the Kittochtinny Historical Society, where-in is addressed her search for an original edition of The Bard Family book. He (Mr. HOVIS) also relates that cousin David H. RYALL's twin brother was named Richard Bard HOVIS, in commemoration of the original Richard BARD, and that the tale of Richard BARD's capture was a favorite family story. He also describes a book by Jim Wilson entitled; The Sons of Bardstown, which relates a brief history of Bardstown, Kentucky, and mentions William BARD and David BARD in the book's introduction.

Joseph's father was John Livingston BARD who was the son of Richard BARD. They first experienced the Bard Book in a Los Angeles library. Joan is a Bard of "Carroll's Delight," through Archibald BEARD (BARD)'s third son (Rev.) David BARD. I am Camilla Ruth Bard Jacobsen and have been documenting my Bard Line. The Bard Family Book leaves off in 1908 with John and Mary Poe Evans Bard, Sedalia MO. Their first child Richard Alexander Bard is my g-grandfather. He settled in Checotah IT (OK) and married the Indian girl - Lucia McIntosh. Her father was Daniel Newnan McIntosh. (Big political influence in the Territory. His father was Chief William McIntosh, Creek Indian from Alabama. I have the book detailing his family. Both before and after. Interesting!!! Richard and Lucia's son and only child, Daniel (just a short sentence in the Family book), was my grandfather. Daniel married Emma and lived in Checotah. Their 3 children - William Jennings Bryan Bard, my father (born 1898), Daniel Lee Bard and Oda Mae Bard. All registered with the Dawes Commission as Creek Indian. William JB Bard had 1 son William Lee Bard and 2 daughters. The last surviving Bards from John/Richard/Daniel/William JB and William Lee are! my brother's 2 sons, William and Robert and Robert's son Kevin. I viewed it and now appreciate all the work you guys did to transfer the info to RootsWeb and CD-ROM. I found a copy of the original Bard Family Book in the hands of a cousin I located in Sedalia MO, last June. I can't tell you who has it, without her permission. It was given to her by a family member. She has given it to her son, but is going to have a photographer make a negative of the photo of John Bard on page 159 (I think), so I can make some copies for the family. This reprint has a brown cover, is about 2/3 the size of an original, and was purchased through a historical society in PA about 1984. Patrick is a Bard of "Carroll's Delight" through William BARD, second son of Archibald, as mentioned on page 263. William BARD's youngest son, Isaac, was born in Nelson Co, KY, Jan 13, 1797 became a Presbyterian minister in 1823 and moved to Muhlenberg Co, Ky. He married Matilda Miranda MOORE, Mar 15, 1827 and had 5 children. Daughter Verona Mary BARD married Carroll LARKINS, page 270. He would like to share his LARKINS data with others. He also has data on the KINCAID family... "Mrs. BARD was a sister of Capt. Joseph KINCAID, who was killed at the battle of Blue Lick.".. BB page 267.

Passed from her mother in 1993. Will probably save it for one of her nieces. Koko is a Bard of "Carroll's Delight" through Archibald's first son Richard Bard.

I read Thomas Smith's posting and identified with it. The Isaac BARD mentioned is the first surviving son after his mother, Catherine (Poe) was released from captivity. I am descended from child number 8, Elizabeth who married James McKinnie. According to Mr. Seilhamer's book (which took my family 50 years to find a copy, and that was a reprint) James' sister Mary was married to John McCullough, who was captured by Indians in 1756. Can anyone suggest how I can view a copy of 'Border Life' in which his 'narrative' is reported? Bear in mind that I am in England. I look forward to learning more about the BARD family and their kin from this list.

I'm a descendant of Robert and Jean Smith who emigrated to Chester Co. Pa. in 1720, bought a farm and started their family of seven children. Their daughter Jean/Jane married James McDowell. Their daughter, Jane, married Isaac Bard who became a Presbyterian Minister and was born in Bardstown, Ky. if my facts are correct. (I was born in Louisville incidentally). That is my connection to the Bards. In tracing our common ancestry I came across your history of "The Bard Family" by G. O. Seilhamer which has a Smith family section and leading off its pages is the legend about the father of our ancestor Robert Smith, the immigrant, who came from Ireland with his brother James, and others. It reads as follows: "The Smiths were of Scotch origin, but settled in Ireland at the Plantation of Ulster. It is said that the family name was McDonald. The ancestor of the Smith family of Chester Co. Pa., who was a farmer and blacksmith in Ireland, was the McDonald who adopted Smith as a surname. When King William III was on his way to Boyne Water, his horse cast a shoe. McDonald, who lived in the neighborhood, replaced the shoe and thus enabled King William to reach the Boyne in time to assume command of his left wing and rout the army of King James. Because of this timely aid to his sovereign, McDonald "the Smith" became Smith." My question is do any of you know more about this story, its details and authenticity. Also what of the family of McDonald. Another source said his given name was John. And were there other sons or daughters?

I am Camilla Ruth Bard Jacobsen and have been documenting my Bard Line. The Bard Family Book leaves off in 1908 with John and Mary Poe Evans Bard, Sedalia MO. Their first child Richard Alexander Bard is my g-grandfather. He settled in Checotah IT (OK) and married the Indian girl - Lucia McIntosh. Her father was Daniel Newnan McIntosh. (Big political influence in the Territory. His father was Chief William McIntosh, Creek Indian from Alabama. I have the book detailing his family. Both before and after. Interesting!!! Richard and Lucia's son and only child, Daniel (just a short sentence in the Family book), was my grandfather. Daniel married Emma and lived in Checotah. Their 3 children - William Jennings Bryan Bard, my father (born 1898), Daniel Lee Bard and Oda Mae Bard. All registered with the Dawes Commission as Creek Indian. William JB Bard had 1 son William Lee Bard and 2 daughters. The last surviving Bards from John/Richard/Daniel/William JB and William Lee are! my brother's 2 sons, William and Robert and Robert's son Kevin. I viewed it and now appreciate all the work you guys did to transfer the info to RootsWeb and CD-ROM. It was given to her by a family member. She has given it to her son, but is going to have a photographer make a negative of the photo of John Bard on page 159 (I think), so I can make some copies for the family. I am going to look up the info. to order a copy of the Bard Book, if it is still available from you. Several other family members will be ordering them also. - Thanks!

I would like to order The Bard Family on CD-ROM. I am descended from Alexander PARKER (A.P.) (1755? - 1831) of Lexington KY (between ca. 1786 - 1831).  He is said to have been from Carlisle, Cumberland Co., PA., along with his brother James PARKER.   But there were other people of the same name and in the same places contemporaneously.  I see there is a chapter in the Bard Book on Parkers, and I hope it will help separate these people out.  I am particularly interested in the military / militia involvement of these people: where and when enlisted, unit service, etc.  This is because I have references to two A.P.'s with the rank of Major, and two others from VA who were officers.  There was a sergeant A.P. from Philly.  There was an ensign A.P.  There was a private A.P. in the Bucks County Associators.  I have just about excluded the VA  A.P.'s, and I know that one Major A.P. from Carlisle PA, of "Parkersburg" WV fame, died before mine.  He and my A.P. were first cousins, I think.  One historian referred to my Lexington A.P. as "Major".  Another says he was an early associator.  So the partial record that I have may well be wrong.  If I could find out where my Alexander PARKER enlisted - Franklin Co.?, Cumberland Co.?, Bucks Co.? I might be on my way! Anyone having info on the Parker line, or Bard / Parker connections, please send me e-mail with the subject: PARKER FAMILY.

I am interested in finding out more about Rev. David BARD, first Presbyterion minister of Bedford Co. PA. I have a copy of a bible record of my ancestor, William Harrison McKINLEY, and in it he mentions his mother, Grizzle Bretan McKINLEY, born Jan. 3, 1792 and she was bapt. by the Rev. D. BEARD. I have recently come across information about the Rev. David BARD and I believe him to be the one who baptised Grizzle. I would be interested in knowing if there is a better history of Rev. BARD, because through finding him I found out where my McKinley's lived. And I know there have been some Beard/McKinley marriages. Please contact me if anyone has any relevant information.
