Martha Mabel Velenia PALMER & John Miller BARSBY

Martha Mabel Velenia was the 3rd child and 1st daughter of Ryfealyer & Martha PALMER. She was born in Stoke Ferry, Norfolk in the autumn of
1885. She was known as Mabel.

Mabel was only 8 years old when she lost her parents, 2 brothers and a sister in 1894. Apparently, she and her elder brother, Angelo,
escaped catching diptheria as they were away from the house at the time the others were taken ill.
Maybe in Stoke Ferry with their ENGLISH grandparents.

Mabel was sent to live with my Great Grandparents, Louis Henry & Kate PALMER in Wisbech. She was just 2 years older than my Grandfather,
Ernest William and so they grew up together as brother and sister.

After leaving school, Mabel moved away to Northamptonshire to work in service. There she met John Miller BARSBY, a tailor from
        Wellingborough, Northamptonshire.

They were married in Wellingborough on 4 August 1906. Jack developed consumption, so they emigrated to New Zealand,
sailing out from Liverpool on 14 November 1908 on the "Cornwall" - source Find My Past.com online transcriptions of UK Passenger Departures 1890-1909

Jack and Mabel had 2 daughters:

Velenia Mabel Olive born 21 April 1914 Gordon Road, Morningside, Mt Albert, Auckland New Zealand
Edna Delphenia born Still living Gordon Road, Morningside, Mt Albert, Auckland New Zealand
There are letters, photographs and postcards from Mabel to my grandparents and to my mother c. 1945-46; particularly at the time of my Mother's 21st birthday in 1945. ~~I hope to put a selection of the postcards onto my new Gallery pages before long.~~ My mother, apparently, did have the chance to go out to New Zealand after WW2 as Jack and Mabel offered to sponsor her; but she didn't go! She still has all the baby clothes that Mabel sent to her when I was born in 1952. Jack and Mabel named their retirement bungalow "Hilgay" after Mabel's childhood home.
