Burwell-born PALMERs in Lancashire
What led me to this line of thought/research? It was in March 2001 that I discovered the Burwell
PALMERs in Lancashire; completely by accident whilst looking at the 1881 Census Surname Index,
using place of birth as a finding aid - and found this bunch in Lancashire!
On checking details, the names were right - they HAD to be part of my family.
But it was the following reply to a posting in the English Fens Mailing List that really confirmed it for me:
"There is a list of Strays from Cambridgeshire found in Lancashire on the Genweb Cambridgeshire pages.
There are about 800 of them."
And lo, and behold, in 1871, there was my Gt Gt Grandfather's younger brother William and his family
in Rossendale, working in a cotton mill. Again the names were right and checking back to the CFHS 1861
Census transcription for Burwell, William and his young family were there, living on North Street just
down the road from his parents, Stephen & Maria.

I know this is one of my PALMER families as the names and ages match exactly their entry on the 1861 UK Census
transcription for Burwell, where they were living on North Street close to Stephen & Maria DeSilva PALMER -
William (senior's) parents.
William's occupation in 1861 was "Engine driver to Threshing Machine". As soon as I see the names - Louis,
Stephen & Delphiner, I know they belong with my lot!
William (senior) is a younger brother to my Gt Gt Grandfather, Emmanuel PALMER.

****Stephen, William, Henry & Louis are brothers; their parents are William & Maria PALMER from Burwell
[see 1871 above]; so they are all grandsons of my Gt Gt Gt Grandparents, Stephen PALMER of Burwell and Maria DeSILVA
of Portugal.
It looks like they moved en masse to Lancashire to find work, particularly as William & Maria's youngest child,
Alfred Edward was born there. There is no mention of William & Maria so I assume they had died before 1881.
