Joseph CAWTHORN & John CAWTHORN


     Last seen on the 1851 UK Census, I have lost track of the following cousins - Joseph CAWTHORN, 
     bp 1825, Emneth St Edmund's  & John CAWTHORN, bp 1832, Upwell St Peter's.

     They are both nephews of my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather, Joseph CAWTHORN landlord of "The Chequers"
     Public House, Lot's Bridge, Three Holes, Upwell on the 1851 UK Census.

Mary CAWTHORN, d. of John & Martha, bp 1806 at Emneth, had an ill. son, Joseph CAWTHORN, bp at Emneth, 1825. Later that same year, 11 September 1825, she marries James WALKER of Emneth. They then have another son, John, bn 1827. [ Emneth PRs at Fenland Museum, Wisbech, Cambs.] On 1851 Census, this family are living at Elm, nr Wisbech, Cambs:-. John and Sarah CAWTHORN, have 2 children baptised at Upwell St Peter':- Martha in 1830 and John in 1832. (CFHS Baptisms Index + I found these in the Upwell Registers.) John, sen. & the baby, Martha died in 1832, (CFHS Burials Index); Sarah and John, jun. re-appear on the 1851 Census - Sarah is re-married to a John SOUTHWELL, Miller/Farmer of 12 acres, and is living at March Riverside, Upwell; John CAWTHORN, jun. aged 18 is living with them. Neither John [jun] or his cousin Joseph are on the 1881 UK Census; but I have found quite a few of their various half-brothers in and around Upwell & Elm. So have they emigrated? - as the middle years of the 1800s saw a massive move away from agriculture to pastures new in the colonies.
