Palmer Children Headstone - detail
The headstone to these two PALMER victims of the Puppet Show fire is supplanted
by two cherubs, a skull and an hourglass. It stands to the left of the PALMER vault.
The inscription reads:
To the Memory of 2 Children
of Henry & Sarah Palmer
Who Both Died Sept. 8th 1727
John was 16 years and 6 Months
Anne was 10 years and 8 months
and underneath it reads:
"You Readers all that doe pass by
Upon our stone then cast your eye
When this you read you'll shed a tear
To think on the dust that slumbers here
And when you looke you'll plainly see
Think on the glass that runs for thee"
My thanks to my mother who had recorded the above inscriptions some time ago.
Also to Jean Matthews & Ray DaSilva Palmer for their contribution; I had managed
to record the children's names and dates in June 2001; but completely missed the verse
underneath due to lichen and the age and condition of the headstone.
