Is your name Myers?
Do you know that:
MYERS, an old and honored surname, is principally of German and Dutch origins. In its first instances of use it was an official and occupational name, stemming from the German "meier" which originally designated a village magistrate or overseer of some sort. Subsequently is served to denote a farmer. It should be noted also that many of the English bearers of the name MYERS are of Dutch ancestry, being descendants of the family of Myerkin, a group which left Friesland, the most northerly province of the Netherlands, in the fifteenth century and settled in England.
Jacob Myers (1730-1781) and Henry Myers (1761-1849) were lieutenants respectively of New York and Maryland troops during the Revolutionary War.
The first census of the United States, taken in 1790, has six listings of persons by the name of MYERS who were residents of Virginia and heads of families at that time. None of them lived in Monongalia County. In contrast, the census records of New York State and Pennsylvania for the same year have respectively seventy-eight and fifty-four references to persons by the name of Myers.
Among the early marriage bonds filed in Monongalia County were those of James J. Myers and Ruhamah Pyles on November 7, 1852.
