John Chalmers, veteran of the Civil War and pioneer of Grays Harbor county area forty years ago, died at the hospital at Fort Steilacoom Sunday.  The funeral will be at Satsop and burial in the Odd Fellows cemetery near Elma, Wednesday, and will be under the auspices of Garfield Post, G. A. R. of Montesano and the G. A. R. of Satsop.
Chalmers was born in Scotland and was at the time of his death 78 years of age.  During the Civil War he entered the service with the First Wisconsin Heavy Artillery in September 1864 and was mustered out of the service in July 1865.
Mr. Chalmers was a citizen of county about forty years, most of the years being spent in and near Montesano and Satsop.  At one time he was the owner of what is not a part of the Brady ranch.  Through his marriage with Miss Smith, who died several years ago, he became related to a good many families in the Satsop Valley.  He was for years one of the most prominent members of Garfield Post G.A.R.
Some few years ago because of increasing feebleness he decided to go to his future home at the Soldiers Home in Orting, where he had lived until a few months ago when he was taken to the Steilacoom hospital for treatment and care.  He has two sons and two daughters living but none of them are now residents of this county.
