The Richardson Burying Ground
Near Rimini, South Carolina

Richardson Graves
Three hundred years west is the site of one of the earliest graveyards
in St. Mark's Parish. In the cemetery are buried Richard
Richardson, Brigadier in the Revolution. James Burchell
Richardson, South Carolina Governor 1802-04, and John Peter
Richardson, South Carolina Governor, 1840-42, and founder of the
Citadel.
This graveyard was in deplorable condition when I
took these photos in February of 2003.
Now, it seems that the Richardson Cemetery Committee of the Clarendon
Historical Society has started a fund-raising drive to repair the
cemetery.
They have already started working on the cemetery and I'm sure they
could use more of our money!

Colonel Augustus Flud Col.
Augustus Flud
was born the
7th of September 1804
died
the 22nd of September 1841
In all his relations with his fellow man
he acted his part with firmness,
constancy & candor.
As Son, Brother, Husband, & Father
he was most exemplary.
He was faithful to his friends;
forbearing to his enemies,
compassionate to the unfortunate;
just without austerity;
generous without prodigality.
On his word you could at all times,
safely rely;
his countenance never deceived
his professions of kindness were the
effusions of his heart.
In fine, he was one whom you could trust
as a friend & love as a brother. This stone is
erected by a devoted Wife,
who can never cease to cherish a sacred
remembrance of his kindness & his virtues.

Matilda Richardson Sacred
Mrs. Matilda M. Flud
Wife of
Col. Augustus Flud
and Daughter of
Hon. James B. Richardson,
Born Sept. 1806 Died 17th Sept. 1854
She was possessed of many of those endearing
and attractive qualities of heart and mind
which so much adorn the woman's character, being an affectionate
and devoted wife, a fond and self-sacrificing mother, and a warm
and zealous friend.
In the domestic circle she was ever found
discharging her relative duties, with ... care
combination of self denying affection
prudence and resolution, and it was there
that her virtues shone brightest and the
extraordinary energies of her mind
were displayed.
While in the midst of an exemplary and
useful life devoted almost exclusively to
the welfare and education of her children,
endeavouring faithfully to train them up
in the nurture and admonition of the Lord
that they too, might become with her
fellow-heirs of the kingdom of heaven,
she was summoned to me her God, whose
religion she had embraced at an early age
having become a communicant of the
Episcopal Church in which communion
she lived and died.
This monument is erected to her memory
by her bereaved children, who owe her
a debt of endless gratitude for her
constant and unceasing care
and kindness.
