Robey-Wait Centennial

Over one hundred and twenty-five descendants and friends of Levi Robey and Almira Wait, his wife, met Sunday, Aug. 19, at Lena camp grounds for their tenth annual reunion.

Just one hundred years ago this fall Mr. Robey brought his family and pioneered in Waddams township, being the second settler in the county.

The Robey history having been given a year ago the program centered this year around the wife's family, the Waits.

The program was as follows:

  • Recitation, Robinson Crusoe's Story (by Carryl-Marshall Wiley.
  • Song, "Rock-a-Bye Baby"-Jean McIlherin.
  • Family history, "Almira Wait's People, Past and Present"-Mrs. R.E. Wiley.
  • Levi Robey's Obituary-Everett R. Read.
  • Remarks-Mrs. Lynn Carr.
  • Trio, "I Passed By Your Window" (Brake-Lucas); "Cradle Song" (Brahms)-Ruth McIlherin, Ann Wiley, Althea Liphart.
  • Anecdotes and Family Traditions, in charge of M.C. Blair.
  • Business meeting.
  • Song, "Blessed Be The Tie That Binds"-By all descendants.
  • Display of relics, candle mold, eyelet mold, had-spun, dyed and woolen coverlet, knitted laces, daguerreotypes, clothes.
  • Manuscript, Aruna Wait's Descendants-Sent by Maurice B. Waite, of California.

The officers re-elected for the coming year are as follows: President, Oliver Graves, Stockton; treasurer, Mrs. Althea Liphart, Lena; secretary, Miss Mary C. Blair, Nora.

Some of the guests of the day were:" Mrs. Mary Hartsough, Nora, Ill., only surviving child of Mr. And Mrs. Robey; Mrs. Wm. Robey, Warren, daughter-in-law of Mr. And Mrs. Robey; Mrs. James Gallagher, West Olive, Mich.; Mrs. Jennie Burns and son, Robey, Washington, D.C.; Mr. And Mrs. Gene Johnson, St. Paul, Minn.; Mr. And Mrs. McIlherin and children, Naperville, Ill.

The cousins were joined by Mrs. Lynne Carr and daughters, Miss Carr, of Stoughton, Wis., and Mrs. Cornue and sons, of Maywood for the first time this year. Mrs. Carr is a descendant of Almira Wait's uncle, Arunah Wait, of Wisconsin. Almira Wait was a descendant of Asa Wait, Jr., Asa Wait, Sr., Nathan Wait, Jeremiah Wait, Sgt. Benjamin Wait (famous Indian scout), and Thomas Wait, of Wales and Massachusetts, who went to Rhode Island in 1638 with Anne Hutchison's party, making eleven generations of the Wait family in America.
