The MCCAW family of Portglenone, Antrim, Ireland, as at 06/07/00. Patrick H. MCCAW (email: patrick@pmccaw.freeserve.co.uk) wrote to Ronald Rodger CASEBY on 05/07/00 seeking help to publish data he had collected on Rootsweb in the hope of having and giving help to others, like myself, interested in the MCCAW and MCCRAW surnames. The following is what Patrick wrote and in response I have published the data he supplied. "I have been researching at length and in great depth a Portglenone MCCAW family. Unfortunately it appears that I went wrong at an earlier generation. I followed circumstantial evidence because I lack real knowledge about my grandmother and her life. I have quite a lot of information about this well respected family and I would like to publish it in the hope that it may attract someone who has a connection with them. I am sure that I could save them months of research and the expense of getting birth marriage and death certificates. I immediately thought of you and your interest in MCCAW genealogy. Also I feel that you are interested in helping folk if you can. Because I am not sufficiently versed in this computer world I would like you to consider making what I have available on your website. The reason behind this (request) is that the family, although quite wealthy and very well respected, ran out of children and grandchildren. I felt quite sad when I uncovered their story. The last generation of the main branch consisted of 4 females and 2 males and not one of them married. A lady in Portglenone to whom I wrote said that the reason for the young folk not marrying was that "there was no one quite good enough for them to marry. They were a bit above the normal folk in Portglenone". I believe one of the girls had an illegitimate child but it died when it was 2 years of age. I am still checking this. I have the birth certificate of the child in question. At present I am awaiting a death certificate from Dublin which might clear up another question I have about the child and my possible connection with this family. There is a possibility that some of the earlier generations (cousins) families still exist but, although I have spent a considerable time trying, I have not managed to contact any of them. Perhaps if you make them available I may benefit by being able to correspond with any interested parties. The family is easily traceable back to 1759 through a book written in 1929 by Robert M. SIBBETT named, "On the Shining Bann". Signed, Patrick MCCAW". Ends.
