He was born 22 May 1912 in Crittenden, Marion County, Kentucky, and died 03 Jan 1998 in Crittenden, Marion County, Kentucky.

Notes for DORTHEA ALICE STILGENBAUER & MILES LEE BELT:
This story was published in the

Crittenden Press – July 9, 1943
This is a story you might think happens only in books or in movies, but it's a real story, and one that is highlighted in the history of the Belt family.

One Sunday morning while out walking along the shore of the Ohio River, Miles Lee came across a small bottle lying on the bank almost covered in the sand. Inside he could see a small piece of paper with some writing on it. The paper was faded with brown areas on it, maybe from lying in the sand in the hot sun and over hundreds of miles of traveling on the river. When Miles Lee got the 2x5 piece of paper out of the bottle it had a name, address and date on it. The name was Miss Dorothea Stilgenbauer, East Liverpool, Ohio, July 4, 1935. The bottle had traveled all the way down the river system from the northeastern part of the state of Ohio and ended its journey here, on the Ohio River bank in Kentucky. It was found in May 1936. Miles Lee decided to write the lady that had put the note in the bottle. He told her about finding the bottle with her name and address, and he told her a little about himself, and asked if she would please answer him back. Dorothea Stilgenbauer did answer Miles Lee back and they continued their correspondence regularly for some time. In the summer of 1937, Miles Lee made a trip to East Liverpool to meet his correspondence friend and her parents. The meeting must have gone well, for it wasn't long until Dorothea made a trip to Kentucky. Miles Lee's family had invited her to meet and visit with them. The relationship of these two young people was formed from a note found in a bottle, and led to their letters to each other. Eventually, they realized that they were more than friends. Here’s an excerpt from the Nov. 6, 1938, Bulletin of Boyce Methodist Church, East Liverpool Ohio, headed “Wedding Bells for Boyce S.S. Teacher.” The marriage of Miss Dorothea Stilgenbauer and Miles Lee Belt was solemnized Wednesday evening in the home of the brides' sister, Mrs. Hazel Kidder. A small group of loved ones witnessed the beautiful ceremony. Miles Lee and his new bride lived in Ohio for a time and their first child, Dorothea “Dot” Belt was born there. (Now Mrs. Ted Hodge). But Miles Lee missed his good ole Crittenden County home, so they packed their things and moved back to Kentucky to continue their life. Back home in Crittenden County, they had three more children, Anna Rae, (Mrs. Jimmy Porter) Phillip Miles and Roy Leslie. After only 17 years of marriage, Dorothea passed away in 1955, but her children cherished their mother and the history of how she and their father met through a note found in a bottle. They have framed the note that she wrote, and Miles Lee's first letter to her. They will be preserved always. Thanks to Anna Rae, Dot

and Phillip for sharing their very interesting and unique family history with us.
