ADOLPH, George Washington

The Elk City Sun, Vol. 36, No. 38, Page 1

George Washington Adolph was born December 23, 1851 in Gate [sic] County, Missouri, and departed this life at the Veterans' Hospital, Wichita, Kans., on June 2, at the age of 88 years.

He grew to young manhood in Missouri and in 1870 he came to Kansas where he resided a few years after which he went to South Dakota. On July 20, 1890 he was united in marriage to Elmira Saul at Hamilton, in Charles Mix county, South Dakota. To this union 12 children were born; four preceding him in death. They spent the first 30 years of their married life in South Dakota, where most of the children were born.

In 1920 they moved to Kansas and located at Alma, where they lived for 15 years. A few years ago they moved to Elk City and have since made their home here.

In 1868 he enlisted in the United States Calvary, Co. D., and spent almost one year in military service, being honorably discharged in 1869. Since coming to Elk City he accepted Christ in a revival meeting in the Baptist church and was baptized. He spoke often of his faith in Christ and found comfort in that trust. He was a devoted father, a good neighbor and had many friends in this community. He has been in failing health for several years but always found it a pleasure to be with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife and eight children. The children are: Helen Thompson, Junction City, Kans.; Lula Martin, Allen Kans.; Maggie Smith, Melvern, Kans.; Geo. Adolph, Manhattan, Kans.; Elmer Adolph, Admire, Kans.; Henry Adolph, Nampa, Ida; John Adolph, Elk City, and Hubert Adolph of the home address. All of the living children but Henry attended the funeral services. Besides these there are thirty-five grandchildren and many other relatives and friends who will deeply mourn his passing. The memory of a good life will abide in the hearts of those who knew him best even unto the end of the journey.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Christian church and conducted by Rev. Carl Packard. A goodly number of neighbors and friends gathered to pay a last tribute to this venerable veteran. Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery.

Note: Transcribed by Carrie Hall, great great grandaughter of George Washington Adolph. George's obit lists his birth as Gate County, Missouri. It should read Bates County, Missouri.
