Title: History of Shelby County MO USA 1884 - James M. Blackford Obituary
Text: JAMES M. BLACKFORD [Deceased]
The last 10 or 15 years have been to the early settlers of Shelby county as autumn to the lea
ves of the trees - so rapidly have they fallen around us. But few of the sturdy old settler
s of the '30s and '40s who laid the foundations of the populous and wealthy county we now hav
e, remain. Among those who have passed away is the subject of the present sketch. Mr. Blackfo
rd came to Missouri in 1832 and settled in this county shortly afterwards. He resided here fo
r over forty years and until his death, which occurred in 1874. He was a worthy representativ
e of the early settlers of the county - brave-hearted and true, industrious and the soul of h
ospitality, a worthy, good man. He was born in Jessamine county, Ky., in 1810, and was reare
d in that early day of Kentucky, being brought up to know what hard work and pioneer hardship
s are from boyhood. In about 1831 he was married to Miss Eliza Deadmond, a daughter of John a
nd Margaret Deadmond. The spring following his marriage he came to Missouri and was engaged i
n farming in this county until his death. His widow and younger children still reside on th
e place where most of his life was spent. He became a member of the Masonic fraternity at Lex
ington as far back as 1832, and was a member in good standing the remainder of his life. He a
nd his good wife reared a family of eight children, namely: Ophelia, the wife of Thomas Biggs
; Lucy, the wife of Charles Collier, now of Trenton, Grundy county; Mary A., the wife of Will
iam Finney; James who married Mary Givens and resides in this county; Clementine, who marrie
d Nicholas Anderson, and after his death J.B. Melson; Susan, the wife of William Fitzpatrick
; Jessamine, femme libre, and Benjamin G., who married Miss Bettie Geigley and has charge o
f the old family homestead. He is engaged in farming in a general way and in raising stock. H
e has one child, Carl. Mrs. Blackford, the mother, the wife of J.M. Blackford, is a member o
f the Christian Church. Three others of her children died in infancy, and two after they ha
d reached mature years. She is an excellent lady and is much beloved both in her family and b
y her neighbors.
