Kidder
twp, CARBON COUNTY,
Pennsylvania
1875
East Haven was founded in the late 1840s as a
“suburb” of White Haven on the opposite bank of the Lehigh River (in Luzerne
County). Located on the east side of
Dam No. 1 on the Upper Grand Division of the Lehigh Canal, it had ample water
power supplied by a dam race. Lucius
Blakslee, a brother in law of Asa Packer, ran a ferry connecting the two
villages for many years. The Lehigh
Navigation gave East Haven easy access to the great markets of the south and
east. Lumber was the major product.
