1875
Bridgeport
was founded about 1856 when Keck, Childs & Co. built a sawmill on the banks
of the Lehigh River a short distance above Lehigh Tannery at Dam No. 2 of the
Lehigh Canal. About 1870 the firm of
Saylor & Day built a steam saw mill at the site, which was sold to Davis,
McMurty & Co. in 1872 and ran until 1880 when it was destroyed by
fire. Local economy centered on the
lumbering industry, which was greatly reduced following the forest fire in the
late 1880s. The Lehigh Valley Railroad
built a bridge at this site, giving the village its name.
