Questions of Origin
Many reports, documents, and other publications have been produced by others researching the Bullock family line that take this family line as far back as 1500s England.  Unfortunately, most of those that I've encountered appear to contain some level of differences in facts that require me to be cautious in accepting the the accuracy of the original, secondary, tertiary, or other resources relied on.   Unfortunately, too, however, some of the archival or published information we are all relying on may not always be accurate and we find ourselves having to believe they are trustworthy--until we connect with others who have more direct and verifiable information.
Verified research on this Bullock family line currently takes us back to George Freeman Bullock, who died on June 21, 1866 in Granville County, North Carolina.   According to one researcher, ancestors of some Granville County, NC Bullocks first settled in Virginia after emigrating from England in the 1600s.  Another researcher found that ancestors of some Granville County, NC Bullocks first emigrated to Maryland from England, also in the 1600s.  Compelling information (that I've not yet verified) compiled by Barbara Bullock Elliott suggests that:

George Freeman Bullock's parents were George Bullock (born abt. 1770 in Granville County), and Mary (Polly) FREEMAN (b. October 26, 1796 in Granville County, NC, daughter of Gideon FREEMAN and Mary RICHARDSON);
George Bullock's parents were James Bullock (b. 1723 in St. Mary's County, Maryland), who married Sarah WEBB abt. 1749 in St. Mary's County, MD, moved to Granville County, NC in 1768, and died there in 1783;
James Bullock's parents were John Bullock (b. abt. 1693 and d. October 15, 1736 in St. Mary's County, MD) and Catherine (b. 1718 in St. Mary's County, MD);
John Bullock (b. abt. 1667 and d. abt. 1705 in St. Mary's County) married Mary OAKLEY 1692; and
John Bullock (b. abt. 1633, probably in England, d. abt. 1705 in St. Mary County, MD) and a daughter of William ASSITER and Ann.

Within this Bullock family's own notes there is conflicting information about who William G. Bullock's parents were.  Various handwritten or type-written notes provided by immediate family members indicate that THOMAS A. BULLOCK and LUCY LANGMIRE were his parents.  Extensive information compiled by Barbara Bullock Elliott, however, indicated that his father's name was GEORGE FREEMAN BULLOCK (born abt. 1810 in Granville Co.; died June 21, 1866), that his mother's name was MELINDA GREEN, daughter of Elijah GREEN and Elisabeth CULVERHOUSE, and that they were married on April 24, 1833.  Barbara's compilation also suggests that Thomas A. Bullock (born June 5, 1857, died February 22, 1866--9 years old) and Lucy Lee Bullock (born May 15, 1862, died March 30, 1863--less than 1 year old) were among William G. Bullock's children.  I am happy to report that I have since (July 2004) found more information that corroborates many of these details.

Barbara Bullock Elliott's is an impressive body of work that takes this Bullock line back 6 more generations to 1600s England.   Among the interesting histories are many valid and compelling connections.   There are, however, also differences between her data and that presented here that challenges us--or me--to sort out more facts.   I am eager to use use Ms. Elliott's and others' work as a guide for further investigation, but will resist incorporating new connections until I am able to identify more directly the sources of the information.

More Cautions
There is great risk in reading too much into isolated pieces of information.   Imagine trying to figure out what an elephant looks like with only a toe, an ear, or just the snout as clues.   The further we go back in to time, limited available records--if we're lucky to find any at all--provide only a momentary glimpse into a situation, and often subject to the interpretation or limitations of the person recording it.

I have tried to be diligent in recording the sources of my information so that it can be judged by myself and others as to its reliability.   Just because a record exists does not mean it was recorded accurately, whether by the scribe or the original provider.   But such records are helpful in providing us with clues that could help verify our assumptions or point us in new directions.

Photographs
Photos help remind us that this is about more than facts and statistics; these were real people of flesh, bone, and blood.   They experienced the adventures of youth, the trials and tribulations of raising a family, the struggles of work and making ends meet, the joys of traditions, and the sorrows of loss.   Some died young; others lived long, fruitful lives.   In some cases, we may even see a reflection of one another.

Contributions
Any information, corrections, clippings, suggestions, and/or photos offered that will help weave the fabric and reveal the texture of the BULLOCK family's history will be greatly appreciated.   All photos or other original documents will be handled with great care, copied, and promptly returned to their owner, unless instructed otherwise.  While I am eager for ANY information, including stories and oral histories, that will help tell our story, I also want to be respectful of people's privacy and to use discretion in matters that may be sensitive.

This document is only as complete and accurate as the information available up to this moment.  No doubt it will continue to evolve over time, as it should.
