General Notes: From a posting on the KYLAUREL-L listserve: "I only have fragments of a story my husband told: Two brothers came to America as indentures, when they landed possibly in NY or Baltimore they were given their freedom and one brother went into North Carolina and one to Kentucky. I do not know the brothers name, the date of their arrival or any other information about them.
"My husband's father was 47 years old when he married Maude Pleasant b.22 Dec 1987 d. 18 July 1984. She was only 17 when they married. My husband was born when his father was 63. He said his father was a great reader, but did not talk much about his ancestors.
"My husband's mother lived in our home from when she was 88 until she died at 96 1/2 years old. I have to tell you a funny story that happened one day maybe 3-5 years before her death. I had taken her to our doctor, mostly for routine checkup. The doctor said, "Granny, what kind of man were you married to." Granny said, "Oh, he was a great man, he was still coming down the hall at 88." The doctor turned to me and said, "Coming down the hall, what does she mean?" So I told him that I had been told that Robert and Maude had always slept in separate bedrooms, his was in the front of the house and hers was in the rear where the children (10) slept. I thought the doctor would fall out of his chair in laughter. Remember Robert and Maude were strictly southern in every respect and until the day Granny died she always referred to her husband as 'Mr. Robert.'
"I must tell you this: in 1976 my husband and I knew that our parents needed care in their later years - so on April 19,1976 we moved my mother-in-law who was 88, my 77 year old father and my 73 year old mother into our four bedroom home. God blessed our efforts in many, many ways. We all shed tears from time to time, but most of all we all shared some rich history and a lot of laughs.

SAIPAN Sept. 14, 1944 Dear Elsie, Well hows everyone? Fine I hope. How do you like it since you moved? Much better I guess. Hope Dallas & the children are alright. Imagine you all are having cooler weather there now. Here it seems to get hotter each and every day. This is the most disagreeable place I have ever seen. Mama wrote me that cousin Elkie has died. Mama said Papa fell off the steps recently but don't think he was hurt much as she didn't say any thing about it. Well it isn't anything here to write about. Will be so glad when I can leave here. I do hope this War will soon be over but it looks to me a long time yet. Will close hoping to hear from you soon.

General Notes: When she was 12 years old, Elsie was hospitalized of osteomyelitis in Rex Hospital, Raleigh, North Carolina from November 13, 1922 through March 22, 1923. Her leg was in a cast for between one to two years after that. One leg grew and the other didn't. After leaving the hospital, Elsie was in a wheelchair for five years. One leg was about 6 to 8 inches longer than the other one most of her life, but Elsie did not let it bother her. She did have a problem with shoes and only wore the built-up soles after middle age. Her hospital bill was over $400, which her father paid every week keeping it up to date. It is reported that her father had to sell some of his road front property to pay the medical bills. According to her daughter Barbara, Elsie was the only child in a large ward at Rex Hospital with quite a few older women, most of whom were very ill, as she was also. She noticed that the ones who were moved near the back door of the room died and were carried out the back door. So she determined that she wanted to live and that she had to get moved nearer and nearer to the front door until she finally made it out--through the front door.

68. William Green "Red" BULLOCK (Minta Adelaide BAUGH36, John Calvin8, Calvin2, William1) was born on August 4, 1923 in Raleigh, NC, died on November 7, 1999 of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, Thomson, Georgia, and was buried on an unknown date in Westview Cemetery, Thomson, Georgia.23
General Notes: Served in the 8th Air Force, stationed in England. Had a renowned career as a high school teacher & coach, GA.
Sports were a pleasure with Bullock by Loran Smith
"Red Bullock has been bedridden of late, but the first thing I noticed when I went to see him a few days ago is that even though his body may be weak, his spirit is as strong as ever. He has lost weight and that sanguine body is becoming fragile, but his spirit keeps going.
You hate to see those you care about suffer and I, like so many who played for him, am sad to see learn of his challenge and his days spent in bed. He doesn't seem to worry about his condition--he continues to joke and needle those who phone and visit him on a quiet street in Thompson, his last coaching stop.
Bullock was a wonderful character. He knew sports, he kept up. He could carry on a conversation about any athletic topic. He would have been a competent sports writer if he had chosen to go in that direction.
There would have been only one problem: Red could not have been a severe critic. He might have needled a few people he wrote about, but he couldn't have blasted somebody. Let somebody else do the whacking. Let somebody else do the exposes. Let's have some fun. Let's enjoy the games.
Yet, as a coach, he demanded discipline. He was tough in this approach to coaching, but he would have found no pleasure, if he had been a writer, in ripping someone in his column. His love for sport and sports people would have been too great.
He was tough enough as a coach, but he wasn't a taskmaster. When he came to our school, he charmed us all right away. He always had something funny to say. He gave everybody a nickname. An example: One of our teammates, who had a pleasant singing voice, was named Meadows. Red called him "Cowpasture."
His practices were long and hard in the days when teams numbered 15 or 16 and getting young boys out to play football was a challenge.
It was always difficult to attract more players because there were so many country boys who had to ride the school bus home and head to the fields, which was my father's preference.
Another problem had to do with the prospect of serious injury. There wasn't insurance, and my daddy worried what our family would do I sustained any serious injury. Paying the medical bills would have been a considerable challenge, and he didn't think there was any sense to my playing football. But I wanted to be out there with my friends. I wanted to play for Red.
Still, I had to keep up with my work on the farm, especially on Saturdays. I can remember those times when I would get home late on Friday night after a game, get a few hours of sleep, and be up by dawn, riding that old John Deere tractor.
Red encouraged me to play sports. He taught me about competition. He was so pleased when I chose to walk on to the track team at Georgia, and when I was given a scholarship, he was even prouder. What pleased me the most, though, was that my daddy finally saw some sense in sport.
Later on, when I covered the Masters for The Banner-Herald, I stayed with Red, who had taken a job at Hephzipah. Red liked golf. In fact, he appreciated all sports and aspired to see as many events as possible.
In recent years, he and his wife, Barbara,, would follow the Georgia Bulldogs on the road, taking the time to see new places along the way.
Red has a wonderful curiosity.
My senior year we took a class trip to Washington and New York. In Washington, we had to take in a Washington Senators game. He knew one of the coaches. In New York, we took right field bleacher seats in Yankee Stadium. Red knew that a right-handed pitcher was starting for the visitors and he said, "Mickey Mantle will be swinging from the left side. Some of you might get a ball where we are sitting." A couple came our way, but we were slow to react and a couple guys with funny sounding accents beat us to the bounding balls.
I have maintained intermittent contact with Red through the years. Each time we parted, we always vowed we would get together more often. Whenever we did get together, there was unrestrained laughter. We just couldn't keep ourselves from reminiscing and telling and retelling those old stories.
That was the way it was last week when I sat his bedside, seeing his fragile body and enjoying his remarkable spirit. Red meant a lot to me at a time in my life when I needed some direction.
When I left, I wiped away a tear as I headed home, wishing that I could get him up and back to the golf course and to his fishing camp where he spent so many peaceful hours.
I, like so many high school kids in this state over the years, truly loved my old coach." Loran Smith is secretary of the Georgia Bulldog Club. E-mail: doloresh@sports.uga.edu.
