In 1924 these two school mates started dating; “keeping company” was Glenn's term. On 08 December 1926 they were married in a double wedding ceremony, and Archie Coubrough and Velma Bush (Violet’s sister) were the other couple. It was held at the Charles Bush (their father) residence with three year old niece Edna Fish as their flower girl. They honeymooned in Regina. The cook car was remodeled and they lived there until their first child was born. They later moved into the house on the Rose farm. They had a total of ten children, two of whom are deceased. Harvey Andrew Rose was born on 09 September 1942 and died of pneumonia on 31 December 1942. He is buried at the Ogema Cemetery. The only photo of him that exists is one of him in his coffin, and this fact bothered his mother. Over 50 years after his death, Violet still wept for him. Elmer Robert Rose was born in 1936. He was married with one child when he was killed in a car accident in the 1970’s. Glenn did harness and shoe repair, telephone repair, carpentry and farmed. And of course, he played his violin. His love of music carried on through his children. They formed the Rose Family Orchestra and played at many dances. |
One story tells of some of the children finding a snake, which was considered a pest in those times. If it got into the basement and was a female, it could quickly multiply and infest the house. The poor creature was taken to the garage where the kids used various tools on it, including a vice; it met it’s demise.
Another story tells of the children finding a dead skunk. On the way to school the next day, they wrapped a cord around it and tied it to the back of the horse. They each took turns sitting on the skunk and going for a ride, until there was nothing left of it. I can just imagine what they smelled like when they got to school.
In the late 60’s early 70’s, the farm was sold. They moved into town and purchased a house. Glenn enjoyed woodworking and made lawn ornaments. They were both very active in with the community and church.

Glenn played his violin with the Merry Music Makers. He entertained at many senior's nursing homes until 1993 when ill health forced him to quit. He died on 26 October 1994 at the age of 92 years. He was buried at the Ogema Cemetery on 29 October 1994. After a brief illness, Violet died on 28 February 2002 in Regina. She was buried at the Ogema Cemetery on 04 March 2002. At the time of her death, her surviving descendants counted as follows: six daughters, two sons, twenty-nine grandchildren, sixty-two great grandchildren, and twenty-eight great great grandchildren. She and Glenn talked about wanting to reach the number of 100 descendants by the time of their deaths. My grandparents were the most honest, down to earth people that you could ever meet. They worked hard and gave of themselves selflessly. They will always hold a special place in my heart. Grandma once told me that evertime she got a splinter, grandpa would tell her 'Well that's what you get for scratching your head!' It is too bad that they were gone before I was old enough to appreciate them for the people they were. When you are young, you sometimes naively believe that your family will always be around. |

Grandpa had two prayers that he said for grace. The first he used for as long as I can remember, and the second he used during his last few years:
Be present at our table Lord
Be here and everywhere adored
These creatures bless and grant that we may feast in paradise with thee
Amen
.....................................................
Most gracious Father
We thank you for this food
Intended for our use
And us to thy service
We ask it through Christ our Redeemer
Amen
