Joe Ammann

Joseph was born on October 15, 1857 in Rhine Province, Germany. He came to the United States with his parents in 1864.

On August 18, 1944 he wrote "When we came to Wisconsin there were many Indians in the woods. I went to school in two log school houses. There were many deer and bears around in the woods when we came to Wisconsin. I was always afraid to go to school through the woods on account of the Indians and bears."

He has received a good education in music from his father and played in the Kappelle des Kiel Musik Verein {Bend of the Kiel Music Club} and the Arion Band. In 1879 he married Margaretha Stenson in Plymouth, Wisconsin. He had a jewelry amd watch repair shop in Kiel and later in Marion, Wisconsin. After retiring, he moved to Los Angeles, California where he died on August 29, 1946. He was cremated.

Mr. Joseph Ammann and Miss Margaretha Stenson, both of Elkhart Lake, came to Plymouth on Tuesday night, and were married by Judge M. M. Gilman. Mr. A. Wolf and Mr. M. Prindeville were witnesses. The couple returned to Elkhart Lake on the 7:00 p.m. train. "The Plymouth Correspondent" congratulates our fellow citizen Joe Ammann, in this happy event and wishes to the young couple well. Mr. Ammann will in a short time, move to Kiel, where he will open a jewelry store.
