Cales from Germany
Many Cale & Cales ancestors in the U.S. are descended from a 26-year-old 1742 immigrant from the Electoral Palatinate, now the Rhineland of Germany. This was David Keel, Kell, or Schäll. {In the Germanic spelling; in the English -- Kail, Kale, Cail, or Cale.} It has been suggested that the Germanic Cale ancestors were originally French Huguenots, fleeing to the Electoral Palatinate in the 17th century, to escape religious persecution. The author has also found an Anthony Kale, who in 1840 was living in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co., Virginia and told the census enumerator he was born in Germany, apparently between 1780 & 1790. Anthony appears in Fredericksburg as early as 1820.
