George Joseph Calderwood in Newcastle circa 1945

Thomas Calderwood in Brooklyn

George Joseph Calderwood, my maternal grandfather, was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England one of several children of George and Ann Calderwood who were born in Ireland. Other children were Francis (Frank), Thomas, Mary Ann, Elizabeth and Maria. I am told by a cousin that there was also an daughter called Margaret, but I have not been able to confirm the information he has provided. There is also a possibility of another child called James, of which more later.

I originally thought that, when in his teens, George J Calderwood travelled to the USA alone. It now looks as though George & Ann Calderwood and their youngest children all travelled together. A George Calderwood is recorded in a Brooklyn Directory as a basket maker in 1889/90. He is then found employed in the same trade in Chelsea, Boston, Mass , in a Directory for 1892. Basket making was George senior, elder brother Frank and George Joseph's occupation back in Newcastle. George senior travelled back to Newcastle and died at his daughter Mary Ann's home in 1893. I am reliably informed that George Joseph ( & possibly his father as well) stowed away to return to England, where he later met and married the sister of Frank's wife.  The younger brother, Thomas, remained in the USA, apparently with Maria & James, and through the magic of the web his descendants and George Joseph's have made contact, reuniting a family that had been out of touch for over 60 years.

Graham Mitchell of England and Richard Calderwood of Florida want to trace more family and also go back in time to trace the family origins in Ireland, if possible. Family lore has it that they originate in the Dublin area (although it could be that George was from Northern Ireland). Ann Calderwood's maiden name was Hand and Julia Hand is believed to be her mother. A child was born in 1907 (dying in 1908) called Julia Hand Calderwood. It is possible that Ann herself was correctly called Julia Ann Hand.

Information that we have on the family, and other - unrelated and incomplete -  data relating to Calderwood births, marriages and deaths in Newcastle, is contained in a Microsoft Office 2000 Database linked to this page. A family synopsis is given below.

George Calderwood married Ann Hand in Ireland where they had 3 known children and one unconfirmed. They moved to Newcastle upon Tyne before 1871/2, where George Joseph, Thomas and Maria were born. James' birth is not recorded as being registered and he could have been born in England or the USA ( or on board ship!).

George Joseph Calderwood born 1871/2 in Newcastle. Married Margaret Ethel Temple in August 1895 and died 31 March, 1947. They had 6 daughters who survived childhood: Ethel, Frances, Ella (Eleanor), Georgina, Ann Nora and Graham's mother, Margaret Patricia. All are now dead.

Thomas D Calderwood born 1875? in Newcastle. Emigrated to the USA where he was allegedly married twice to sisters called Walsh, the first, first name unknown, bore 4 children - William 1904, Edward 1906 & Thomas 1911 survived adolescence and a girl who unfortunately did not. The 1910 US census, however shows a Thomas Calderwood living with his brother & sister Maria & James, with no hint of a wife & family. I have located, in the same census a family called Walsh where the identically named and aged 2 eldest children, along with his future wife Ellen are listed. It may be that he was only married once, but took on the children of a deceased sister in law. The second, called Ellen Walsh, bore 4 more- Vincent, Richard, Eleanor & Patricia. Thomas D died 26 February, 1947 in New York. At the time of writing (July, 2002) Vincent is alive but not able (or willing!) to assist. Eleanor died in 2001, but we do not know the fate of the older half - brothers, or the whereabouts of Patricia. We believe she may be resident in Buffalo, New York but have not been able to trace her.

Francis (Frank) Calderwood ,birth date 1859/60, married Elizabeth Ann Temple (sister to Margaret Ethel above) in 1884 and those who remember him believed he died childless in about 1952 in Newcastle. There is however, a reference in the 1901 census to a William Calderwood, aged 16, who is a child of this marriage not recalled by older relatives. He was born late December, 1894, some six months after the marriage and he was killed in the First World War..

Mary Ann Calderwood (born in Ireland) married a Michael McGinty (labourer) in Newcastle in 1884. Michael's father was Patrick (deceased) and they later lived in Richardson's Buildings, West Moor as evidenced by George senior's death certificate. They had (we believe) 4 children. Michael McGinty junior died a bachelor in 1952 in Ashington Northumberland. Annie McGinty emigrated to the USA & married there, married name unknown. We believe there were 4/5 children of this marriage. Annora McGinty married unknown & lived in Billericay Essex England. Margaret McGinty married Thomas Beal, she died childless in 1991, aged 96.

Elizabeth Calderwood (born in Ireland) married a Francis Hind (coal trimmer) at Annitsford, Northumberland in 1888. Francis' father was James Hind (deceased). The family name was changed in later years to Hand (reasons unknown). There were 4 children, the first 3 registered as Hind & the last as Hand. Francis was killed in a mining accident and Elizabeth married Bill Whitfield. Annie Hind (known as Nancy) emigrated to the USA and married a Brookbanks. The marriage failed in the 1920s with no children. She lived with her Father in law at Mix Run near Driftwood Pa. and later in Florida.  Mary (Molly) Hind married John Sugden & had 2 children. George Calderwood Hind was killed in the First World War. Jane Hand married John Redford and her children & grandchildren are the source of much of the information on the Hinds & McGintys. My thanks to Christine Smith & Bill Redford.

Maria Calderwood was born (and registered!) 7 May, 1878 when her parents lived at 30 Prudhoe Street, Newcastle. A Maria Calderwood is recorded in the 1910 US census living with her 2 brothers and working as a servant in a private home. We have no record beyond this.

James Calderwood is a mystery as I have found no reference to him apart from the 1910 census.

Margaret Calderwood, who according to Bill Redford was born in Dublin about 1861, married a William Lazenby. They had two children, Bernard & James. Both of the children were killed in the First World War.

George and Ann, together with most of the children are recorded in the 1881 Newcastle Census as living at 30 Leazes Lane, Newcastle upon Tyne. George's death has been traced, but we can find no reference to Ann after the 1881 census.

Thomas, Maria & James are recorded at 591 Wythe, Brooklyn in the 1910 census. Care though, their ages differ to other sources.

Thomas and his then family are recorded in the 1920 US Federal Census as living at 343 Park Avenue, Brooklyn.
