Lester Battel, Lifelong Cass City resident Lester Battel died Monday at Provincial House, Cass’City, following a lengthy illness. He was born Aug. 14, 1914,in Cass City, the son of Duncan and Anna (Knight) Battel. He was united in marriage to Margaret Cowan Oct. 23, 1954, in Kawkawlin. Battel was a member of the Hillside Gospel Hall of Cass City, serving as an elder and treasurer. He also was a member of the Michigan Milk Producers Association. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; one son, Paul Battel of Cass City; one daughter, Mrs. Michael (Linda) Stec of Cass City, 3 grandchildren, and 2 sisters, Leila Battel and Mrs. Helen Greenleaf, both of Cass City. One sister, Lu Vern, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Little’s Funeral Home, Cass City, with William Metcalf, of Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, and William Lavery of, Ferndale, officiating. Burial will be in Elkland Township Cemetery, Cass City. 12-20-1989


Martha Budry, Gilford, Died Friday, December 23, 1988 at Bay Medical Center. She was 97. She was born October 1, 1891 in Tuscola County to Samuel and Sarah Masten. She was a member of the Gilford United Methodist Church. She is survived by one son, Clinton Smith of Fostoria, five daughters; Wilma Bromar of California, Nina Chardon of Vassar, Nella M. Parson of Sterling Heights, Marion Nixon of Arizona and Arlene Smith of Florida; one grandson, Ronald Cashier of Vassar and two granddaughters, Joyce Earls of Reese and Sharon Fisher of Vassar. Funeral services were December 27, at Atkins Memorial Chapel of Vassar with Rev. Otto Flachsmann officiating. Burial was in Lapeer County's Rich Township Cemetery. Stanley Burdy, Reese, Died Sunday, February 2, 1986 at Bay Medical Care Facility in Bay City, following a lengthy illness. He was 71. He was born April 1, 1914 in Gilford Township. He married the former Pheadelis L. Klopf on February 26, 1938. He was a farmer, but also sold real estate. He served as Gilford Township Treasure for many years. He was a member of Trinity St. James Church of Munger. He is survived by his wife, one brother, Burton J. Budry of Reese, one sister Mrs. Harold (Doris) Krause of Fairgrove, his step mother, Mrs. Martha Budry of Fairgrove and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were 11 a.m. today (Wednesday), at Trinity St. James Lutheran Church of Munger with the Rev. Robert Yungman officating. Burial was in the Gilford Township Cemetery. Dolores M. Cheek, 53, of Fairgrove died Saturday, July 27, in Saginaw General Hospital after a lengthy illness
Dolores M. Thane was born April 11, 1932, in Tuscola County to Meizer and Vera Thane
She married Louis C. Cheek Nov. 26, 1949, in Caro. Mrs. Cheek was employed at General Cable in Cass City
Survivng are her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Robert McIntosh, Mrs. William Parmenter and Mrs. George Russell; one son Charles L. Cheek, and 11 grandchildren
Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. Raymond Miller of Horsehead, N.Y.

Elmer A. Collier Vassar Died Wednesday, June 24, 1980 at Saginaw General Hospitals. He was 69. He was born March 9, 1912 in Wixom but lived most of his life in Tuscola County, residing in Unionville before moving to Vassar. He retired from Gray Iron Foundry in Saginaw in 1970. He was a member of Harvest Bapist Church of Akron. He is survived by his wife, Mary; one son, Robert of Fairgrove, two daughters, Mrs Neal (Beverly) Redwanz of Decature, AL and Mrs Thomas (Nancy) Zelmer of Vassar; two brothers Raymond Collier of East Tawas and Fay Collier of Montrose; two half-brothers, Carl Levitz of Elkhart, IN and Herbert Levitz, of LaGrange, IN; nine granddaughters and two great-grand-children. One daughter, in 1934, and one son, in 1979, preceded him in death. Funeral services were Saturday at Briggs Funeral Home of Akron with Rev James Parker officiating. Burial was in Hickory Island Cemetery. Memorials may be mde to the Harvest Bapist Church of Akron.

Elston DeCou, Vassar, Michigan~Died Monday, Oct. 4, 1982 at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw after a lengthy ill­ness. He was 68. He was born March 3, 1914. He mar­ried the former Genevieve Gibbs on June 16, 1939 in Caro. He graduated from Vassar High School and worked 10 years at the Ford Motor Company. He served with the U.S. Armed Forces in Africa, Sicily and Italy. He returned to Vassar and took up farming. He later retired from farming and the Vassar Manufacturing Company. He was the first president of the Vassar Parent-Teachers Associa­tion and was the last treas­urer of the Garner School. He was a member of the Disabled American Vet­erans and the Vassar Lions Club and was a past master of Lodge 163 of the Free and Accepted Masons. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Marilyn Horvath of Alma; one son, Gary DeCou of Caro; three brothers, Carl DeCou of Arizona, Glen DeCou of Kalamazoo and John DeCou of Orchard Lake; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were Thursday at Clark Funeral Home of Vassar with Rev Clare Patton and Dr Richard D. Lobb officiat­ing. Burial was in Eastlawn Gardens of Saginaw. Bernice G. Hall Dickerson 1913-1985 Bernice Gertrude Dickerson, of Denton, died Tuesday, June 4, 1985 at Ypsilanti. She was 71. Mrs Dickerson was born July 1, 1913 at Silverwood, the daughter of Edwin and Zella (Willsey) Hall. She married Ward Dickerson on March 5, 1932, in Mayville. She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church, Belleville. Besides her husband, Ward, she is survived by two sons, David of Denton and Ronald of Flint; two grandchildren; and four sisters, Mrs Lee (Virginia) Rogers of Venice, Florida; Mrs Maida Butterfield of Saginaw, Mrs Mary Seward of Bradenton, Florida and Mrs Bertha Wilcox of Otisville. Frank P. Dombrowski Sr.,Birch Run, Michigan Died Thrusday, October 3, 1985, at his residence. Age 76 years. He was born in Menasha, Wisc. Oct 5, 1908. He married Violet M. Konoski Feb. 18, 1928 in Flint. She survives him. He was a member of SS. Charles and Helena Catholic Church of Clio and Local No. 192 Roofers. Surviving besides his wife is one son and daughter-in-law, Frank Jr. and Clara Dombrowski, Corunna; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Rosemary Miller, Byron; Patricia and Allen Wahlgren, St. Paul, Minn.; Judith adn Flyod (Mike) Essenmacher, Walled Lake; Bonnie and Alex Beller, of Akron, Mich.; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Stanley and wife Della, Leo Dombrowski, two sisters, Clara Heindle and Stella Lutz, all of Menasha, Wisc.; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by son-in-law Edward Ahrens and three brothers, John, Benney and Simon. Funeral service will take place 10:00 a.m. Saturday at SS. Charles and Helena Catholic Church, Clio. Leland E. Ensign, 87, of 5315 Dorrance Road, Kingston, died Monday at Caro community Hospital after a short illness. He was born Sept. 2,1896, at Caro, the son of John and Rose (Rushlo) Ensign. A lifelong area resident, Ensign was a retired farmer. He married Alice Dorrance Sept. 2, 1918, who preceded him in death. Ensign is survived by two sons, Lee Ensign, Caro and Douglas Ensign, Kingston; three daughters, Eleanor Brooks, Kingston, Dorothy Hudson, Frankenmuth, and Marguerite Caswell, Reese; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. 97 of Elwell sister of Mrs. Edith Ward of Cass City, died in a St. Louis. Mich., nursing home Jan. 23.
Funeral services were held Saturday from the Achenbach Funeral Home in Reese. Burial was in Caro. Mrs. Fader was born Nov. 8 1882 at Caseville. She was co owner and operator of the General store at Colling for many years.
She is survived by two step-daughters; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters Edith Ward and Mrs. Florence Sinclair of Lansing, and many nieces and nephews.

Clark Helwig, lifelong Cass City resident Clark Helwig died May 10 at Hills and Dales General Hospital follohing a lengthy illness. He was 77. Helwig was born May 22, 1911, in Elkland Township, the son of the late Edward and Mary Striffler Helwig. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Walters April 15, 1939, in Cass City, where they made their home. The couple celebrated their golded wedding anniversary April 15 of this year. Helwig was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church, Cass City, and the Thumb CB Club. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. One son, William; one daughter, Judy, and one granddaughter, Dawn, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Friday at Salem United Methodist Church with the Rev. Andrew Hoagg, Funeral services for Andrew Hoagg of Decker were to be held Wednesday at Little’s Funeral Home, Cass City. He died Monday in Hills and Dales General Hospital. Born Feb. 11, 1900, in Evergreen Township, he was the son of Thomas and Mary (Dunn) Hoagg. He and Miss Eva Travis were married Nov. 24,1926, in Cass City and they made their home in Decker. He was a member of the Shabbona United Methodist Church and had been employed by the Sanilac County Road Commission, retiring in 1965. Survivors are his wife, Eva; 2 sons, Merle Hoag, and his wife Peggy, of Northville and Dean Hoag, and his wife Sue, of Cass City; 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren; Ten brothers and 2 sisters preceded him in death. Services are scheduled at 1 p.m. with Rev. Peter Crawford, pastor of Shabbona United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Elkland Cemetery 6-14-1989


Oran Hughes, 62, of Cass City succumbed Sunday at Hills and Dales General Hospital. He was born Aug. 7,1923, in Plainview, S.D:, the son of Charles and Lizzie(Moore) Hughes, and came to Cass City when a young man. Hughes married Berneice Darling May 23,1943, in Macon, Ga., The couple made their home in Cass City. He was a member of the Caro Post of Disabled American Veterans, the Cass City Gun Club and served with the Cass City Fire Department for 25 years. He also served with the U. S. Army during World War I1 in the Pacific Theatre. Surviving, besides his wife, are three daughters, Mrs. Eric (Mary) Smith of Decker, Mrs. Phillip (Betty) Morse of Lapeer and Mrs. Arnold (Judy) Corkins of Davison; one son, Charles Hughes of Anaheim, Cal., 11 grandchildren, and two greatgrandsons. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Lavola Cox of Sunnyville, Cal., and a nephew, Douglas Cox of Sunnyville. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:00 o’clock from Little’s Funeral Home, Cass City. Rev. Harry Capps, pastor of First Presbyterian church, will officiate. Mrs. Lorencz dies in Bay City Mary Lorencz, Owendale, died Monday at her daughter’s home in Bay City, following a short ill ness. She was born April 11, 1901, in Doroszlo, Hungary, the daughter of the late John and Helen Martonka Hozsa, coming to South Bend, Ind., as a young child. Miss Hosza was united in marriage to Mr. Joseph Lorencz Sr., Aug. 12, 1919, in Detroit, coming to Owendale in 1939 from Wyandotte. Her husband died Oct. 26, 1982. Mrs. Lorencz was a member of St. Agatha Catholic Church, Gagetown, and its Altar Society. She became a U.S. citizen Dec. 5, 1960. She is survived by two sons. Joseph Lorencz Jr. Gagetown, and John Lorencz, Owendale, seven daughters, Mrs. William (Marion) Howell, Mrs. Alger (Helen) Smith and Mrs. Richard (Elizabeth) Binder, all of Essexville, Miss Rose Lorencz, Lincoln Park, Mrs. Ronadl (Nancy) Prokopenco Bay City, Sister Joan Kathleen O.P. Anchorville and Dr. Kathleen Lorencz, Birmingham; twenty-four grandchildren, and twenty one great-grandchildren. One brother and three sisters preceded her in death. A prayer service will be held Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Little's Funeral Home, Cass City. Funeral mass for Mrs. Lorencz will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Agatha Church. Lorna M. Kitchen, 78, of Deford, died Friday, Oct. 7, at her family residence following a brief illness. She was born July 15,1905 in Kingston, the daughter of Martin and Elizabeth McCarrick. She spent her girlhood days in the Kingston area and later moved with her parents to Pontiac. She married Howard S. Kitchen Sept. 5, 1925, in Pontiac. The couple resided in Pontiac until moving to the Kingston-Deford area in 1972. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Howard B. Kitchen, Marlette, J. Brian Kitchen, Deford, and Harold Kitchen, Coral Gables, Fla. ; one daughter, Mrs. Clyde (Helen) Canfield, Livonia; one brother, Steven McCarrick, Lake Orion; two sisters, Stella McCarrick, Burbank, Calif., and Mrs. Ethel Churchill, Phoenix, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Oct. 10, at the Marsh Funeral Chapel, Marlette, with Elder Raymond Kitt of the Marlette 5 Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating. Hazel T. Moore, Mrs. Hazel T. Moore, 88, a lifetime resident of Cass City, died Monday at the Hoyt Nursing Home in Saginaw. Sagmaw. She was born July 16, 1899, to Andreas (Andrew) Pfann and Jennie (Buckingham) Pfann of Cass City and spent her childhood on a small farm southeast of Cass City and attended the old McConnell School. Her mother Jennie died when she was 7 years of age. For several years she made her home with her aunt, Mrs. Alice Moore, a well-known Cass City business woman. In 1916 she married Paul Silvernail, the son of George Silvernail of Cass City, and after a short stay in Detroit they started farming in Greenleaf Township. In 1926 her husband was killed in a farm accident leaving her with 4 children and one born shortly after his death. After a short stay in Cass City, she returned to farm life. A year later she married Stephen (Bub) Moore and moved to a farm west of Cass City. He preceded her in death. She returned to Cass City and for the last 38 years has made her home at 4364 S. Seeger St. where she operated a boarding-rooming house until February of this year when declining health forced her retirement. She was a longtime member of the Church of The Nazarene and was active in the WCTU for many years. She is survivkd by 3 sons, Clarence Silvernail of Saginaw, Paul Silvernail of AuGres and Norman Silvernail of Big Rapids; 3 daughters, Pauline Cash of Tinley Park, Ill., Bernice Berry of Saginaw and Waunita Silvernail of Livonia; a stepdaughter, Bernice Tuckey of Davison; 3 stepsons, Stephen Moore of Mio, Vilas Moore of North Branch and Perry Moore of Ithaca, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A stepson, Clyde Moore of Saginaw, MI, preceded her in death. The funeral service will be at Little’s Funeral Home, but arrangements were incomplete at press time. Clare S. Osgerby Caro, Died Friday, Oct. 17, 1980 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ann Arbor following a brief illness. He was 65. He was born May 18, 1915 in Reese, graduated from Caro High School, and was a long-time resident of Tuscola County. He married the former Mary Alice Gibbs on Feb. 5, 1938 in Caro. He was the owner of Osgerby Insurance Agency which he began in 1938. He also was very active in civic affairs. He was the administrator of Caro Community School elections, a past president of the Exchange Club, a member of the Caro Rotary Club, an American Legion Baseball manager, and served as Indianfields Township Clerk for 22 years. He was a World War II veteran, and a member of the Theron Atwood Post 7 of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 164 of Caro. An avid student of the Civil War, he also was a member of the Watrousville Historical Society. He was a member of the Caro United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Judy Lucas of Toledo, OH, Mrs. Joann Geybels of Antwerp, Belgium, and Mrs. Janet Bassford of Cincinnati, OH; one son, Charles Osgerby of Grand Rapids; one sister, Mrs. Jean Hartman of Caro; three brothers, Cecil Osgerby of Caro, Jack Osgerby of Swanton, OH, and Robert Osgerby of Plano, TX; two cousins, Cecil Baker of Caro and Harry Baker of Pontiac; four granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were Tuesday at Collon Funeral Home of Caro with Rev. Martha Cargo and Rev. Brian Kundiger officiating. Burial was in Indianfields Township Cemetery. Ella Victoria Price, 90, of Cass City died Sunday, March 27, at Provincial House after a lengthy illness. She was born March 15, 1898, in Florence, Wis., the daughter of John and Anna (Erickson) Holmburg. She married Charles Price in 1922 in Hillsdale. They moved to Cass City from Lansing in 1933. Mr. Price died in June of 1936. Mrs. Price was a teacher in the Cass City Public Schools, teaching fourth grade from 1935 until her retirement in 1967. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cass City and a past member of the Michigan Education Association and the National Education Association. She is survived by one son, Kenneth Price of Rochester, Mich. One daughter, Kathryn, 2 sisters and 2 brothers preceded her in death. Funeral services are scheduled Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Little’s Funeral home, Cass City, with Rev. Harry Capps, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Cass City, officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Hillsdale. 3-30-1988

She was born Oct. 8, 1908, in Marion, Mich. The fomer Alice Jeffery married Clifford Priestley April 2, 1930, at Plymouth. He preceded her in death Dec. 23, 1979
She was a member of Akron Community Church. She lived at Frankenmuth Convalescent Home since April 1982
Survivors include three daughters, Joyce Corradi of Lapeer, Joan Smith of Rochester, and Mrs. Richard (Judy) Wallace of Cass City, and three sons, Don Priestley, Bill Priestley of Marion, Mich., and Duane Priestley of Akron. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren
Funeral services were held Dec. 14, at Briggs Funeral Home in Akron. Rev. Paul Sheets of Ithaca officiated

The former Fern Kelley was born June 30, 1908, at Cass City. She was a graduate of Tuscola County Normal School and taught school for several years
She married Louis Severance June 15, 1929, in Cass City. In 1935, the Severances began a gas station and store business in Akron
Later they established the Circle S business on their farm on Akron Road
Mrs. Severance helped run the business until their retirement in 1975
She was a member of the Akron Community church and its women's society
She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Dale (Janice) Smith, Akron, and Mrs. Fred (Sheryl) Ruppert, Ortonville; one son, Charles Severance Peikie, Mich.; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Roy (Freda) Wagg, Cass City, and Mrs. Leroy (Ruby) Evans, Gagetown, and four brothers, Scott Kelley Lapeer, Robert Kelley, Arizona City, Ariz., Maurice Kelley, Bradenton, Fla., and Harley Kelley, Fort Wayne, Ind.

Edward C. Smith, Funeral services were held Saturday for Edward C. Smith, 79, of Cass City, who died May 10 at Hills and Dales General Hospital, Cass City, after a lengthy illness. He was born July 18,1909, in Woodbury, Tenn., the son of the late Andrew and Ida Pearl Todd Smith. Smith was united in marriage to Dorothy s. Stine July 4, 1931, in Pontiac. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Pontiac and Westland, moving to Cass City in November 1976. Smith, a psychiatric nurse in various county hospitals, was a member of the Cass City Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; one daughter, Mrs. Lyle (Mary Jane) Wheeler of Fenton; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Jesse French of Stockbridge, Ga. Two brothers preceded him in death. Funeral services were held, at Little’s Funeral Home, Cass City, with Willard Dodson of the Cass City Church of Christ, and Keith Doty of the Deckerville Church of Christ, officiating. He was born April 18, 1914 in Caro and was a life-long Tuscola County resident. He married the former Louina Orr on April 10, 1938 in Caro. He served wit the U.S. Army during World War II. He and his brother, Keith owned and operated Riley’s Shoe Store in Caro for many years. He served on the Caro Village Council and was a past president of the Caro Exchange Club. He was also a member of Caro Veterans of Foreign Wars post 4164 and Mount Moriah Lodge 226 of the Free and Accepted Masons, and the Caro United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Marilyn Riley and Mrs. Michael (Carolyn) Haffner of Orlando, FL; one brother, Keith Riley of Caro; two sisters, Mrs. William (Bernice) Fitzgerald of Florida and Mrs. Anna Wittie of Caro and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services are 2 pm Friday at Collon Funeral Home of Caro with the Rev. John Bunce of Caro United Methodist Church officiating. Burial with be in the Almer Township Cemetery. Lucille Stafford, Mrs. Lucille Arrie Stafford, 73, of Vermilion, Ohio, formerly of Cass City, died Monday, May 8, at the Lorain Community Hospital in Ohio after a short illness. She was born June 9,1915, in Silverwood. Her parents were Mason and Mary (Sergent) Wilson. She manied Carl Stafford July 1, 1937, in Elmwood. They lived in Cass City, Ubly and Granite City, Ill., before moving to Vermilion. Mrs. Stafford was a life member of Echo Chapter #337 OES, Cass City, a member of the White Shrine, Hills and Dales Hospital Auxiliary, a former member of Trinity United Methodiest Church and past president of the Ubly Woman's Club. Survivors include her husband Carl; 2 daughter's, Mrs. James (Sharron) Gettens of Vermilion, Ohio, and MRs. Richard (Sandra) Ambuehl of Granite CIty, Ill.; 5 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Two sisters died previously. Funeral services were held Thursday at Little's Funeral Home, Cass City, with Rev. Eldred Kelley, pastor of the Evangelical Free Church of Cass City officiating. Burial was in Elkland Cemetery, Cass City Cass City Chronicle 5-17-1989


Mrs. Edith Lillian Surbrook of Cass City, 84, died. Sunday, July 23, at Hills and Dales General Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born Sept. 27, 1904, in Evergreen Township, Sanilac County, the daughter of Albert and Eva (Churchill) Kitchin. Miss Kitchen married Rev. Lewis Surbrook June 15, 1926, on the homestead farm where she was born. They pastored 4 together in many Michigan Missionary churches for 65 years. She was a member of the Cass City Missionary Church and of the Missionary Women's International. Surviving are her husband; 2 sons, Ray Surbrook of Cass City and Rev. Mark Surbrook and his wife Linda of Huntington, W. Va.; 4 daughters, Mrs. Jay (Lois) Sugden of St. Helen, Mich:, Mrs. Wayne (Evelyn) Whittaker of Cass City, Mrs. Ronald (Sharyn) Perry of Shawnee, Kan., and Mrs. Earl (Eleanor) Dietzel of Marlette; 18 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Four sons, 4 brothers and one sister preceded her in death. Funeral services were scheduled Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the,Cass City Missionary Church, with Rev. Bruce Pearson, District Superintendent of the Missionary Church, Michigan District, and Rev. Clifford Jordan, pastor of the Cass City Missionary Church, officiating. Interment was to be in Elkland Cemetery, Cass City. Arrangements were by Little's Funeral Home. 07-26-1989
