Will of John Shepherd Recorded Feb. 2, 1797 in Fluvanna Co. VA
I give to my daughters, Joanna and Annas, one Negro girl each, one feather bed and furniture, one cow and calf, one ewe and lamb, to each be delivered by executors at their marriage or as they arrive to a lawful age.
I lend to my beloved wife, Mary Shepherd, the plantation and land whereon I now live.
(Should my son, Augustine) marked out, Christopher penciled in), go to Kentucky and be inclined to purchase in that part, then it is my wish that his part be sold for him, providing it does not interfere with the plans of my executors, in order for him to purchase land in that country)
With all my stock of horses, hogs and sheep to be freely enjoyed by her (Mary Shepherd) as also my household furniture, kitchen furniture, plantation and blacksmith tools, during her natural life, and the whole of my Negroes, except the one to each of my daughters.
I give to my son, John Shepherd, after division of my estate the sum of forty pounds, eight shillings ($196.00) more than an equal part with the rest of my sons.
I give and bequeath to my daughter, Annas Shepherd, a woman’s saddle and bridle, to be delivered to her by my executors, when called upon, to be heirs forever.
If my son, Augustine Shepherd, should choose to live upon the land I now live, I give and bequeath the same to him after the death of my wife, one hundred and fifty acres to be land of at the lower part of my land, including all houses, to him and his heirs forever. I, also, give and bequeath to my son, Augustine, when he arrives of age, one feather bed, and furniture, one cow and calf, and one man’s saddle to be delivered to him by executors.
I give and bequeath to my daughters Mary Perry, Elizabeth Cocke, Joanna and Annas, fifty pounds ($243.50) to each, to be raised out of my estate by my executors.
I give and bequeath to my daughter, Nancy Perkins, one Negro girl, named Lucy, now in her possession, also to my said daughter, after the death of my wife, fifty pounds ($243.50) to be raised out of my estate by my executors.
I give and bequeath to my daughter, Frances Baskett, the land she has now, to be enjoyed by her and heirs forever.
It is my will and desire, that after my just debts are paid should there be any remainder, the same to be divided equally among all of my children, or their legal representative.
It is my will and desire, if either of my children should die, before lawful age and no children, their part shall be equally divided among all remaining brothers and sisters or their legal representatives.
