Note: Sampson's tombstone is located on the top of the ridge opposite the entrance to Saunder's Creek on Rt. 60 in Milton, WV. There are only two graves here. One is his grave, with the tombstone inscribed as stated, and surrounded by an iron fence. This tombstone is damaged and the top half is lying on the ground inside the fenced area.
The other grave is located to the left of Sampson's but any inscription is barely legible.
It appears to be that of his wife. The letters HELE were the beginnings of any inscription.
This grave is a brick wall sarcophagus about a foot high, which was once covered by the top half bearing the inscription. This top half is broken in two piece now and appears to be made of cut stone. He died on 21 Jun 1849 in Cabell Co., Va.(WV). Parents: Col. William Sanders and Martha Green.
