Lewis
Jackson Ashworth(1) was born on 9
Nov 1857 in Putnam Co., VA (WV). He died on 8 Sep 1920 in Huntington, Cabell
Co., WV. L. J. ASHWORTH, BANK PRESIDENT, IS DEAD
Victim of Heart Failure, Following Attack of Influenza Last Spring
WAS CONFEDERATE VETERAN; IN BUSINESS THIRTY YEARS
Prominent In Politics, Former Education Board Member, Church and Loadge Man
Heart disease, following an attack of influenza which he suffered in the spring
caused the death at 9:50 o'clock yesterday morning of Lewis Jackson Ashworth,
president of the Twentieth Street Bank and for more than 30 years a prominent
figure in the business life of Huntington, 1808(maybe 1898) Third avenue. Mr.
Ashworth had been confined to his bed for two weeks.
Mr. Ashworth was born in Putnam county November 9, 1857. His father, James Ashworth,
was a Confederate soldier who laid down his life in battle.
Came Here in 1888
After spending his boyhood and youth on the farm, Mr. Ashworth engaged in business
in Windield. In 1888 he came to Huntington and opened a general store at the
southeast corner of Third avenue and Eighteenth street. His first home was in
an apartment over the store. Subsequently he occupied a residence on the same
side of the avenue and a few doors from his store. Still later he built a modern
home on the other side of the avenue, but in the same block so that throughout
his life in Huntington he lived within the same square.
He retired from the mercantile business about 1907, after a highly successful
career.
Was Bank President
Thereafter he devoted his time to his duties as president of the Twentieth Street
Bank, an institution which he helped to organize and of which he was president
from the beginning of its existence, and to the real estate business, in which
he was actively engaged.
Among his numerous contributions to the physical upbuilding of Huntington the
most important was the Ashworth block, a modern business and apartment building
at Third avenue and Eighteenth street.
Active in Politics
In politics Mr. Ashworth was a Democrat and took an active part in the affairs
of his party. He served at times as a member of the board of education and on
the city council before the commission plan of government was adopted.
He was adevout Christian, a member of the Twentieth Street Baptist church, which
he served for a quarter of a century as treasurer.
he was also a member of the Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias.
Married Three Times
Mr. Ashworth was three times married. His first wife was Miss Fannie Middleton,
to whom he was married on September 3, 1882. She died on November 10, 1894, leaving
one child, a daughter, Ethel, now Mrs. George Hickman, of the Ashworth apartments.
He was again married on October 13, 1895, to Miss Lilly Healan, who died on July
7, 1898, leaving one daughter, Lilly, now a member of the Ashworth household.
On August 5, 1905, he was married to Miss Florence Goode, who survives. By this
marriage there are two children, Lewis and Anna Marie.
He also leaves one brother Marion Ashworth, of Burlington, O., two half-brothers,
Albert Henderson, of Barboursville, and Tom Henderson, of Delaware, O., and two
half-sisters, Mrs. Mollie Hanna, of Columbus, and Mrs. Jane Hollandsworth, of
near Hurricane.
Funeral services over the remains of Mr. Ashworth will be held Friday afternoon
at 2:30 o'clock at the Seventh Avenue M. E. church. Burial will be at Spring
Hill cemetery.
The change from the Twentieth Street Baptist church to the Seventh Avenue Methodist
Episcopal church was neccessitated by repairs now being made on the church of
which the late Mr. Ashworth was a member.
The Huntington Herald Dispatch, Thursday Morning, September 9, 1920
Note: The headlines state Mr. Ashworth was a Confederate Veteran, but that appears
to be a mistake. It was his father, James Ashworth, who was in the Civil War
as stated in this article. Lewis Ashworth was only three years old when the war
broke out.
