-----
Widow of Churchman, Granddaughter of Pioneer, Meets Tragic End at 84
-----
CLOTHING CATCHES FIRE WHILE ALONE IN HOME
-----
Funeral Will Take Place This Afternoon at Barboursville M.E. Church,
South
----------
Mrs. Mary Merritt Thornburg, 84, widow of the late U. M. Thornburg,
and a granddaughter of the man who gave the site for the first court house
at Barboursville, died at 12:15 o'clock Tuesday morning. She was the
victim of burns sustained last Monday afternoon when her clothing
caught fire from a stove beside which she was sitting in her Barboursville
home. Since the death of her husband Mrs. Thornburg had lived alone. No one
was with her when he clothing took fire and before she was found she
was burned beyond hope of relief. Her burns were so deep that, though she
was conscious in the hours that preceded her death, she did not suffer
acutely.
She was the last of the daughters of William Merritt, and her two
brothers, Theodore Merritt of Guyandotte and Phillip Merritt of West
Huntington, are now the only survivors of a family of twelve children.
She was born in Barboursville and spent her long life there. She was
privately educated. At the age of fifteen she was married to Felix
Duffin, a railroad contractor engaged then in the construction of the
Chesapeake & Ohio railway. One son, Charles Duffin, grew to manhood,
but for many years his whereabouts have been unknown. A daughter, Mary
Alice, died in infancy. After a widowhood of many years she was again married
to U. M.
Thornburg, prominent farmer and churchman, now dead only a few years.
Mrs. Thornburg was active in the religious affairs of the community in
which her life was spent. She was a member of the M. E. church, South,
Barboursville, and her funeral will take place there this afternoon at
2:30 o'clock.
Six nephews will serve as bearers, as follows: Myron C. Neale, Eugene
L. Neale, Claude Filler, Marion C. Dussenberry, Frank L. Murphy, and E.
H. Berry.
Mrs. W. C. Dusenberry, Mrs. T. S. Neale and Mrs. J. C. Payne of
Huntington are nieces of the deceased.
-The Herald-Dispatch, Wednesday Morning, January 25, 1922
Note: The article of Mrs. Thornburg's death, which is dated Wed. 25 Jan
1922, states that she died at 12:15 on Tuesday morning (which would be
the 24th). Her injuries were sustained late Monday, which was the
23rd, so there is a conflict with her death falling on the 22nd as the
records shows.
H-D, 25 Jan 1922 She was buried on 25 Jan 1922 in Barboursville Cemetery, Barboursville,
Cabell Co., WV. Parents:
William Merritt and

PHILIP M. MERRITT
Philip M. Merritt, 75, one of the surviving early residents of Cabell county
one time member of the state legislature and postmaster at Barboursville, was
found dead in bed yesterday morning at his hime in Westmoreland. Apoplexy was
the cause of his death, physicians stated.
"Uncle Phil" Merritt, as he was popularly known, was born on the Merritt
farm at Greenbottom, May 2, 1846. When a boy the family moved to Barboursville.
During the greater part of his life he engaged in railroad contracting work.
He was appointed postmaster of Barboursville under the McKinley administration
and at the expiration of his term of office was elected to the state legislature.
He moved with his family to Huntington eighteen years ago. He was active in republican
politics.
Funeral services will be held at the Barboursville M. E. church this afternoon
at two-thirty o'clock. Interment will be made in the Barboursville cemetery.
He is survived by three sons, W. H. Merritt, of this city, and Charles E. Merritt
and Duffin Merritt, of New Martinsville, W. Va., and by two daughters, Mrs. Anna
Siebold and Miss Blanche Merritt, of Westmoreland.

I am looking for information on the children of this couple, particularly Thomas
(b. abt. 1812) who married Margaret L. Hite on July 18, 1833 in Cabell Co., Va.
(WV). Thomas and Margaret may be my g-g-g-grandparents. If so, they are buried
in Bartholomew Co., Indiana and have connections to Missouri. I have dates that
are consistent with the above but nothing firm. Thomas and Margaret's children
would be William, Thomas Jefferson Jr., Margaret L., and Benjamin Frank.
