bulletCaptain John W. Harshbarger(1) was born in 1836 in Falls of Mud, Cabell Co., VA (WV). Now known as Milton, WV. He was a Sheriff after 1865 in Cabell Co., WV. He died on 10 Feb 1909 in Milton, Cabell Co., WV. John Harshbarger

Captain John Harshbarger, eldest
son of the late David Harshbarger, one
of the pioneer citizens of Cabell county,
passed away at his home in Milton at
10 o'clock p.m. Wednesday, February
10, 1909, at the age of 72 years and three
months.
Captain Harshbarger was born at the
Falls of Mud river, near Blue Sulphur,
in Cabell county, and the principal
years of his life were passed in the
county of his birth. It was a life
passed in activities not experienced by
the average man of his day. Frim his
earliest years he was pushing forth into
life's work, it being in the period of the
country's less settled condition. At
about the time he arrived at manhood's
estate, he answered to the call of the
wild, and in company with Mr. J. N.
Blackwood, now of Huntington, started
west, stopping in what is now Fort
Scoot, Kansas, where he remained about
two years, during which time he met
and wedded the wife who had trodden
life's pathway with him to his death.
He returned to his native State soon
after his marriage, taking up his residence
near his birthplace.
Enlisting with the federal army soon
after the outbreak of the Civil War, he
was chosen captain of Company G.,
Third Regiment West Virginia Cavalry,
which commission he held until the
end of the war.
He was chosen Sheriff of Cabell county
immediately after the war, and during
the trying times of that period, made
friendships that lasted to the end, not-
withstanding the onerous dutied of his
office at that time.
Early in the days of the then
prospective town of Milton, he moved into
the territory now constituting the same,
where he resided until his death.
Shortly after the war, he engaged
with Mr. M. Newman in the saw mill
and timber business, from which business
they started one of the earliest
flour milling business enterprises begun
west of the Allegheny Mountains, the
sole ownership of which business Mr.
Harshbarger soon acquired and through
"custom" work, he gained a large
acquaintance throughout a wide section
of country.
During the latter years of his life, he
served as deputy sheriff of Grant District
for two full terms of four years
each, performing the dutied of the office
in a manner which gained for him
an increased affection among the
people.
Captain Harshbarger was commander
of a company of soldiers made up of
comrades principally from among his
neighbots, and the honor and reverence
in which he was held by his old soldier
comrades all during his life was
the highest compliment which could
have been paid him, and is the surest
recommendation of his brotherly and
considerte character toward his fellowman.
But no less in sincerity in attestation
of the high regard in which he
was held during his life is the universal
expression from all his many acquaintances,
that "He was truly ever a man of
and with the people." A man void of
sham and always considerate of others,
with the roughest side on the exterior,
and a soul of compassion hidden underneath.
He was half-brother to Messrs, J. H.
Harshbarger, of Jackson, Ohio, G. W.
Harshbarger, of Milton; Sheriff I. J.
Harshbarger, of Huntington; Mrs. Ellen
Smallridge, of Teays, W. Va.; Mrs.
C. H. Morris and Mrs. J. N. Blackwood,
of Milton, all of whom survive him. He
is also survived by a widow, plans for
a celebration of the fiftieth anniversary
of their marriage being considered for
the month of next April, as well as
eight children, three boys and five girls,
all grown and all residing in the neighborhood
of their parents, save one
daughter, who resides in New York.
The last illness came suddenly in the
form of a stroke of paralysis on Sunday
evening, February 7, at 9:30 o'clock,
becoming unconscious in a few hours,
and gradually sinking until death
occurred Wednesday evening.
The funeral services were held at the
M. E. church, South, at 3:00 o'clock p.m.
Thursday, conducted by Rev. G. W.
Parker and Rev. W. T. Justice, the
former being pastor of the Milton Baptist
church, the latter also being a Baptist
minister and an old soldier of the
Civil War. Burial was in the Milton
Cemetery.

Hello Candie,

I am attaching a scanned image of an obituary of my great-great grandfather, John
Harshbarger. It may take some time to load. The first column has been cut off
because the original is so big, but it ends so:

". . .and a soul of compassion hidden underneath."

"John Harshbarger was the eldest child of David Harshbarger, deceased, and his
first wife, Elizabeth Carroll, from which marriage two children were born, the
younger, Peter, dying a good many years ago."

I hope you can use this, and please feel free to post transcription or whatever
on any Internet site you might have.

Best regards
