David Harshbarger Passes Away at the Age of Eighty-Six.
David Harshbarger died at 4:05 a. m. Monday, March 7, 1898, at the home of his son, Ira J. Harshbarger, in Milton, Cabell county, W. Va., in the 87th year of his age, surrounded by his sons, daughters and grand-children.
Deceased had suffered with illness some months previous to his death, and was unconscious the last twenty-four hours of his life.
David Harshbarger was born in Botetaut county, Va., on the 16th day of October, 1811, and came to West Virginia in 1818. He lived in Cabell county, in ten miles of Milton, for eighty years. He was identified with the enterprise of Milton since it was a town, he being the original owner of the site of the town before the C. & O. railroad was built.
He was twice married, the first time in 1834, there being two sons born unto him, one of whom, John, is still living and a citizen of Milton, and the other son, Peter, having died in 1866 in Illinois. He was married the second time in 1845, there being nine children the fruit of this union, seven of whom are living and two dead, the surviving children being four sons, George W., Ira J., Henry and Samuel, and three daughters, Ellen, wife of J. H. Smallridge, of Scott, Putnam county; Mary, wife of J. N. Blackwood, and Maggie, wife of Dr. C. H. Morris, the latter two residing in Milton.
Mr. Harshbarger was a member of the M. E. Church, South, for several years, and died in peace with God. He was a kind husband, indulgent father and enjoyed the respect of all who knew him. His wife died August 3rd, 1895.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Lauck, of the M. E. Church, South, at the church in Milton, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, before a large number of the friends of the family, after which the remains of David Harshbarger were laid to rest in the Milton cemetery.

Elizabeth Harshbarger Clay-Locke

DELAND - Elizabeth Harshbarger Clay-Locke, 91, of
North Stone Street, died March 3, 2000, at her apartment
at Sterling House.

Mrs. Clay-Locke retired in 1975 after 50 years as a
schoolteacher. She graduated from high school at
16, and received her bachelor's and master's degrees
from what is now Marshall University in Huntington,
W.Va. She taught at every grade level in public schools
and was an associate professor at Stetson University.
Born in Milton, W.Va., she moved to this area in 1952
from Clermont. After moving to DeLand, she taught at
Wisconsin Avenue/Dempsie Brewster Elementary School.
In 1968, she joined the Stetson University department
of education, teaching preparation-for-internship classes
to prospective teachers. In addition to teaching, she
was an accomplished pianist and organist, and was
the organist at the Methodist Church in Milton. Locally,
she was the accompanist for the DeLand Lions Club
minstrel shows in the 1950s.

A member of Trinity United Methodist Church in
DeLand and Delta Kappa Gamma, PEO, Mrs. Clay-
Locke was a charter member of the Century Club in
Milton, which was chartered in 1923.

She is survived by a son, Hank Clay of DeLand, a
daughter, Carol LaPides of Atlanta, four grandchildren
and one great-grandchild.
